Solobackpacking Subic Beach, Juag Lagoon, Calintaan Island and Tikling Island: The Pride of Matnog, Sorsogon

Matnog in Sorsogon City is the southernmost part of Bicol Region, and I'm proud to say that I have conquered it lately. Considered as one of the busiest seaports in the Philippines, Matnog is the jump off point to the southern Philippines and vice-versa. I didn't really have a "pre-planned itinerary" going to Matnog but my "being travelholic" if there's such term took my sanity away so I ended up travelling to Matnog. I particularly look for Subic Island which the town is known for.

Arrival at Subic Beach at Subic Island in Matnog, Sorsogon. What I like about the place is its natural wonders.
Nope, this is not in Palawan. This is in Bicol, my hometown. According to our bangkero, this place is called Kalintaan Cave. We didn't go to the cave anymore because we didn't have enough time.
Registration must be accomplished first before heading to our destinations. The cashier informed us that the boatwill take us to Subic Beach, Tikling Island and Calintaan Cave. Regitrastion per head is Php70.00 as of this writing while the boat costs Php1600.00.
If not because of these ladies, then, I should have shouldered the boat fee alone. Good thing I saw them. Haha! They're from Bicol University. On my left is Joanne, college instructor.
Clear water greeted us on our way to Juag Lagoon Marine Sanctuary.
Arrival at Juag Lagoon. The lagoon is owned by Alex Geneblazo. For more information about this must-visit Marine Sanctuary visit their Facebook Fanpage.
At the the lagoon. "Juag Lagoon Marine Sanctuary is a center created toward the preservation of the local marine wildlife. public education, and enjoyment" according to it's Facebook page.
That's yours truly at the lagoon. Entrance fee is free but when we went there we were not allowed to swim because the fishes might be disturbed. You can also feed the fishes but you need to but their food at Php50.00 (price as of this writing).
The water is soooo clear. Unfortunately, I forgot the names of these fishes. I'll figure it out in my next visit.
Our next destination is Subic Beach. See photo above.
Subic Beach is located at Barangay Calintaan in Matnog, Sorsogon. Others say that this place might be "the edge of the world."
At the beach gifted with powdery white sand.
Other visitors and tourists flock the area. Cottage at the beach costs Php350.00. A "house" is also available for those who want to stay "overnight" but don't have tents and the like. Overnight camping is allowed at beach. Police officers are also in the area to secure the place.
That's yours truly on our way to Calintaan Cave.
Calintaan Cave is just sooo amazing. Unfortunately, we didn't have enough time to get in there.
Our "final" destination: Tikling Island. Tikling reminds me of a farm bird but I didd't see them at the Island. Now, I wonder why the island was named "Tikling." Haha! I heard though that there are "wild pigs" in this island.
That's yours truly enjoying the clear and refreshing seawater at Tikling Island.
At Tikling Island, also in Matnog, Sorsogon.
It says "You are now leaving the island of Luzon." Thank you Matnog for the awesome experience. Till we see again!!!

Reasons Why You Should Not Stay At Benjie's Kubo & Cottages in Bolinao, Pangasinan

My excitement quickly faded when I saw Kuya Benjie’s Kubo and Cottages . It was too far from what I imagined. I couldn't believe that after travelling for 6 hours or so from Baguio City, we will be welcomed by a shanty-like resort (imagine dogs roaming around the place?) If not because of Patar Beach’s powdery sand and clear water plus the food and fun and laughter from my fellow QAs, then, our team building would have been a total disaster. Kuya Benjie’s Kubo and Cottage is definitely not highly recommended so beware of other blogs saying that it’s a must-visit place. You may visit Patar Beach but do not “check-in” at Kuya Benjie’s Kubo and Cottages. To date, the place is the worst place I have visited so far.

Here are some of the reasons why you should not stay at Kuya Benjie’s Kubo and Cottages:

1. Accommodation fee is not reasonable. A Php4, 500.00 overnight accommodation fee for a cottage with a dingy “private CR” and intermittent water supply is definitely not reasonable. Room is not air-conditioned and there’s only one electric fan (prior to our trip, Kuya Benjie informed us that there are two electric fans). You will definitely not have a great sleep at the place especially if you’re in big groups, say 15- 17 heads. The cottage is also shared with other guests. There’s no privacy at all and when you sleep at night, it will look like an evacuation center.

2. Poor customer service.

3. Dingy shower area. I’m not so sure if Kuya Benjie’s Kubo and Cottage is intentionally “cutting” their water supply. I find it illogical to have water supply at the shower area but none at our private C.R. Because we don’t have water, we need to go the “shower area” and pay Php10.00. We even fetched water at the nearby “poso.”

4. According to Arjay: "Tim Gunn, a high fashion designer that he is, often said, “Make it work!” which is what we have to do in order to withstand the chaotic atmosphere of Kuya Benjie’s resort. A summer get-away should be relaxing, worry free and fun but these elements are nowhere to be felt when we arrived at the resort; without exaggeration, it felt like the world is crumbling. Kuya Benjie promised to have a decent accommodation- with beds that would suffice for a “barkada” group, with proper ventilation and bathroom and with available kitchen utensils to use for free- all these are part of a conspiracy theory to sway guests.
"On the other hand, Bolinao deserves a round of applause for its majestic beauty. Its crystal-clear water and powdery white sand looks marvelous! Just be sure to avoid Kuya Benjie’s so called resort.

" Overall, with no offense meant, the perimeter is a living testament of squalor where temporary dwellings are built to accommodate tourists who have been lured by the false advertisement of the resort owner."

Exploring the Marvels of Luna La Union

The scorching sun kissed my skin as I slowly descend from an air-conditioned Fred and Cathy Trans bus. After travelling for almost three hours from Baguio City, I have reached the town of Baloaon (prior to my trip I was advised to drop by Baloaon because buses don’t go to Our Lady of Namacpacan Church in Luna). I didn't mind the "heat" when I went out. I searched for the Luna-bound tricycles and, fortunately, I found it as easy as 1-2-3. From Baloaon proper, it took us approximately twenty minutes to reach the Our Lady of Namacpacan Church. (Tricycle fare is Php10.00). Here are some of the tourist attractions in Luna, La Union that you shouldn't miss when travelling:

The Our Lady of Namacpacan Church in Luna. In Ilocano, "namacpacan: means "one who feeds."
1. Our Lady of Namacpacan Church. My first destination in Luna is the century-old Our Lady of Namacpacan Church. Built in the 18th-19th centuries by the Augustinians. The church houses one of the most important pilgrimage sites during the colonial era--the shrine of Our Lady of Namacpacan. As early as 1587, Namacpacan was recorded as a visita (satellite mission, whose church is manned by non-resident clergy based in the cabecera) of Purao (now Balaoan). It was a settlement along the camino real (national road) from Vigan to Manila, and travelers stopped there to refresh themselves. Since restaurants was not yet in vogue, local families offered the travelers food and lodging, hence the name. This is definitely a must-see church if you're planning to visit Luna.

Pebbles Beach in Luna is endowed with "never ending colored stones."
2. Pebbles Beach. I stayed at Namacpacan Church for almost thirty minutes (I prayed and thanked God for all the blessing He had given me).  When I realized that thirty minutes is enough, I quickly rushed my self to Pebbles Beach because I felt the need for a refreshing "sea-bath." Outside the church, I saw a Manong, probaly in his early thirties, and I asked him the way to the beach. He told me to take the road to my left and turn right and, then, turn right. I followed what he told me and, viola, I found the place!  Pebbles Beach has a never ending supply of colored stones. Locals say that they have been quarrying for years and the stones just keep coming their way. To date, Pebbles Beach is one of the most unique beaches I've checked so far because of its pebbles - not sand.

Yours Truly at Pebbles Beach. The beach is not only gifted with pebbles but also with clear an refreshments seawater.
3. Baluarte Watch Tower. The lighthouse "remain" is known to the locals as "Baluarte." If you are traveling and you want to visit this World War II remnant, asked the locals "Where is Baluarte?" Built by the Spaniards during their heydays, the mighty Baluarte was used as watch tower and observation post by the authorities for impending danger from the sea. Not from typhoons or tsunamis, but from the Abu Sayafs at that time: the Japanese, Chinese and Moro pirates who took pleasure in raping coastal towns and settlements.Today, Baluarte stands in disarray, vertically cut in two because of eroded base and foundation, its two halves stand through concrete post supports on its sides. Like an old wounded soldier, it still stands in the pebble beaches of Luna, watching its industrious stone pickers finding a way for survival amidst the scorching hot sun. Time will come when this historic landmark will be finally and totally washed ashore, but the Baluarte which saw the Luna brothers grew, will continue to be a representation of the people of Luna, strong and united like its cemented bricks.

The Spanish Baluarte in its current form.
My "colored stones." I had fun collecting some stones at the beach.
(Note: This article is part of my #ItsMoreFunInThePhilippines: #ItsMoreFunInLaUnion travel series which aims to highlight, promote and uncover the hidden splendor of La Union, Philippines to the world. Big thanks to Fred and Cathy Trans for making my trip possible!)

Now Serving in Baguio City: Reverie Resto-Lounge

American poet and educator Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once said: "Sit in reverie and watch the changing color of the waves that break upon the idle seashore of the mind..."

I heard about Reverie Resto a few weeks back so when I thought of literally "sitting in reverie" and have another exciting gastronomic adventure, I thought of visiting them. Good thing Theresa and Leah were also in the mood for a foodhunt so we decided to drop by there after our shift. Reverie Resto-Lounge is an establishment that provides gourmet dishes at affordable prices and the first establishment to offer flavored beer in Baguio.

The Food
Although my food arrived late because the "lady-in-charge" didn't hear me (according to her) when I ordered, I'm still satisfied. As a "self-proclaimed" pasta-lover, I tried Reverie Pasta, Reverie's signature angel hair pasta in home-made tuyo sauteed with garlic and butter. It tasted so good that I didn't even notice that it's gone in my plate in less than twenty minutes.

Reverie Pasta
On top of Reverie's Pasta, I also tried Raspberry Beer. This is definitely a must-try beer if you want to satisfy your cravings for "something flavored."

Raspberry Beer.
Given the fact that we want to try other mrice meals at Reverie (how I wish we tasted them all...lol), Theresa opted to have Reverie Chicken while Leah preferred Beef Salpicao and Coleslaw. While eating, I could sense that my lady buddies "loved" what they're eating. And I wasn't wrong! After eating (while I'm still waiting for my order...lol), they told me that they like what they ate and they will definitely recommend them.

Beef Salpicao. Beef salpicao is another typical Filipino beef dish made of marinated beef sirloin or tenderloin then stir cook for a few minutes. Beef salpicao is usually serve with fried garlic and almost similar to bistek tagalog.

Reverie Chicken. Reverie's deep fried chicken is served with your choice of sauce: butter, garlic, sweet soy or Reverie Barbeque sauce.

Coleslaw. Coleslaw is a salad consisting primarily of finely-shredded, raw cabbage, and dressed most commonly with a vinaigrette salad dressing.
The Customer Service
The lady who assisted us was helpful and accommodating but I wish she clearly heard me when I told her that I want Reverie Pasta so I didn't have to wait 47 minutes. Haha! Other than the "delayed order" which is unintentional, I'll rate Reverie's overall customer service "4 out of 5" - 5 being the highest. Not bad, ins't it?

Reunited after two months. In this photo: Yours truly with my lady buddies Theresa (center) and Leah.
The Place
The place is fine. When we went there, it was quite save for some songs playing at the resto so it's gonna be the perfect spot if you're looking for "peace of mind." Overall, it's clean and, given it's floor area, it's also perfect for team building of at least 20 heads. Reverie is also "smokers friendly" - meaning you can have cigar while sipping your favorite drink.

How to go to Reverie Resto-Lounge
If you're in Session Road or anywhere in Baguio City, hail a cab and tell the driver to bring you to at Upper General Luna at Casa Generosa Hotel/Nostalgia Bar. Look for the big sign "Reverie." Reverie Resto-Lounge is open daily from 10am onwards. To learn more about them, check and like their Facebook Fanpage.

What can I say about our overall experience at Reverie Resto-Lounge? That was reverie, of course. Why don't you give them a visit?

If there's a new place in La Trinidad that you shouldn't miss, it's going to be Half Cup. Half Cup is a home-based bakeshop offering top notch and quality cupcakes, pasta and sandwiches. Although located in La Trinidad, Benguet , it has also expanded its services in Baguio City. It's something new that you should definitely try!

I recently had an interview with Half Cup and I'm glad to feature here the best things that they can offer to us!

1. Why did you come up with Half Cup as name of your bakeshop? Does it have significant value to the cafe's owner? The truth is we don’t really know too. We listed several possible names like Dessert Home (top contender), Kilowan (1 kilo), Wooden Spoon (closest to our theme), and more or less 20 other names. Half Cup was removed from the list earlier on, until all possible names didn’t really sound good. That was when we looked back at our list and noticed Half Cup. We kept repeating the name until we realized, Half Cup, hummm, seems pretty good that it just might work. Despite the not so beautiful history of our name, we came up with our mission, “We will never be whole because we will always be half of what we could become”.

Cheesecakes Bar.Cream Puffs and Mini Pies are sold per box of 6. Cheesecake Bars are sold per pack of 3.
2. What is your best-seller? Our best-sellers are Pesto Chicken Pasta, Strawberry Chicken Basil Sandwich, and Molten Chocolate Cupcake with Vanilla Ice Cream.

3. What will we expect from Half Cup? One thing to expect from us is that we will do our best to improve as the years go by.

Brownies.
4. What makes Half Cup different/unique from other bakeshops/cafes in the City of Pines and La Trinidad? Not only do we personalize cakes but we also accept orders out of our menu, whatever a customer wants or requests, as long as we think we can make it, we gladly accept the challenge.

Fresh Flowers Wedding Cake and Cupcakes.
5. What can you say about Half Cup's location/ambiance? What inspired you for your interior design? Our location is strategic for La Trinidad residents. We wanted a homey and comfortable feel for our Café, thus our interior.

6. What “food” are you going to highly recommend to your customers? Our Gluten Free, No Sugar Added Cheesecake and Spicy Shrimp Pasta.

Sugar-free muffins,
7. Almost everyone loves to be connected to the internet while dining, etc. Are you a wifi free zone? We do not have Wi-Fi in our café because we encourage our customers to talk to their companions, play table games or read rather than focus on their gadgets. We are not against the internet and we understand that our business is dependent on the internet because we still market our products through Facebook but we really hope our customers have real conversations in the café.

Strawberry Cake.
8. Any message you want to tell your customers and soon-to-be customers? For our customers we like to thank you for coming and trying our products. We hope we did serve you well. Please do come back. And for our soon-to-be customers, what are you waiting for!

Half-cup is definitely a must-visit place in La Trinidad. According to Balong Nini it is "excellent so far. [It is}a hidden gem that deserves more attention. Come and visit, and tell your friends! Better yet, bring your friends along and have a good time. I fully recommend it...The cupcakes are top notch, truly not half-baked (figuratively and literally). The other snacks (pasta and sandwiches) taste great as well. Serving size is worth the price."
How To Order: Please make your orders through e-mail, text message or personal message. Please indicate the product, quantity, and date of delivery (make sure to place your orders at least 5 days before delivery date). No deliveries during Sundays.

Half Cup is located at the 3rd floor of Tokiko Building, KM5, La Trinidad Benguet (in front of BDO La Trinidad).  They can be reached at phone #s: Globe: 09278707735, Smart: 09496721946 or via email: halfcupbakeshop@gmail.com. Our "Half Cup" Invasion in La Trinidad, Benguet

The distinctive aroma of Pesto Chicken being cooked while we were patiently waiting stimulated my intense desire for "something pesto." I haven't eaten Pesto for the longest time, and Half Cup's Pesto Chicken was just simply irresistible. After ten minutes, our Pesto Chicken was served and we were ready for another "gastronomic adventure." Sure, that was fast! "Excellent!" I said to myself.

With my lady buddies Leah and Theresa trying Half Cup's best sellers. Thank you Half Cup for the warm welcome!
The Food
One of the best things about eating in a new place for the first time is when you leave it with a "happy tummy." This is exactly what Half Cup offered us. Since it was our first time, we tried their best-sellers (Check out my full interview with Hal Cup by clicking here). Theresa and I tried Pesto Chicken Pasta while Leah tried Spicy Shrimp Pasta. On top of these, we also tried Molten Chocolate Cupcake with Vanilla Ice Cream and Cheesy Beef. Cheesy Beef is definitely as must-try if you will visit Half Cup.

Pesto Chicken Pasta is one of Half Cup's best sellers. This dish makes use of Penne pasta with basil pesto and grilled chicken. This is definitely perfect for all pesto-lovers out there.
Cheesy Beef.  Also a must-try at Half Cup. I definitely enjoyed eating this.
Spicy Shrimp Pasta is another best seller at Half Cup.
The Customer Service
Our stay at Half Cup wouldn't be satisfactory if not because of great customer service. Shel and her sister were very friendly and accommodating. Big thanks for their warm welcome!

Yours Truly with Leah and Theresa and Shel and her sister. Thank you ladies for the warm welcome! More power to your business.
The Place
Located at the third floor of Tokiko Building in La Trinidad, Benguet, Half Cup is definitely good for a coffee or tea break. It's a perfect place for "merienda" as well as friends and family get-together.Although relatively small compared to other establishments, I'm pretty sure you'll have a great stay at Half Cup.
Half Cup is located at the 3rd Floor of Tokiko Building in La Trinidad, Benguet (in fron tof BDO La Trinidad)
Customer Feedback
The good thing about Half Cup is they have a "feedback bulletin board" which enables customers to share their thoughts about their overall experience at Half Cup. Surely, this is a pretty good idea. I tried it myself and I also looked for some of the "best comments."
Time to be heard. That's yours truly sharing my "comments" on the bulletin board.
Here are the comments from other customers (click on photo to enlarge):

The Philippine BPO and Its Impact on the Economy

$

0
I joined the BPO industry in 2010 and, more often than not, I hear negative remarks about the nature of our job. People look down on call center workers because they think we do not have a “real job.” Some even say that our life is dull and routinary: we go to work, take calls and go home and, then go to work, take calls and go home. Such remarks are painful – especially if such remarks are coming from people who are obviously unaware of how BPO impacts the Philippine economy.

BPO consumption
The BPO industry is considered as the fastest growing industry in the Philippines. In 2005, the Board of Investments (BOI) estimated that there were 69, 000 call center seats “with 75, 000 employee industry-wide” in the Philippines. This contributed to 70 percent growth rate in call centers in that year alone compared to previous years. Seven years later, 700,000 were reported to be employed in BPO, making it “one of the chief economic drivers in the country.” By 2016, the Philippine BPO is estimated to employ 1.3 million and 3.2 million Filipinos in direct and indirect employment respectively according to the Information Technology and Business Association of the Philippines (ITBAP). These figures are quite staggering and this has a significant contribution as to why the Philippines is now called “The Call Center Capital of the World.” A survey by Tholons conducted in 2013 also identified the Philippines as the “leading call center destination beating out India.”

Economic Bearing
The BPO industry plays a vital role in curbing the unemployment rate in the Philippines. Contact centers have consistently contributed the highest percentage of employment in IT-BPO services according to a survey conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO). From roughly 65,000 employed in 2004, the contact center employed approximately 330, 000 in 2010. Current figures reveal that the Philippines has approximately 900, 000 call center employees.

“The call center industry is considered as the fastest escalating employment provider for Filipino college graduates who seek jobs that have better income generation, “says Roy Jonathan del Rosario, author of Philippine Call Center Industry Soars High.

On top of generating jobs and direct employment, the BPO industry has also a significant contribution to real consumption which “pump primes” an economy. Here are some of the interesting facts about the BPO industry’s consumption cited by De La Salle University professor Dr. Alvin Culaba on the 2nd FGD on BPO Innovation and Competitiveness:

• “Php 232.7 billion in VAT contribution for food purchases
• Php 73.7 billion in housing rental
• Php 45.4 billion in public transportation and mobile communications costs
• Php 22.5 billion in clothing costs
• Php 80 billion in savings/investments
• Php110 billion in taxes that could go to cover public services equivalent to 300,000 classrooms and 3.2 million families receiving maximum Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) for a year.”

Revenue generated from the BPO industry also drives the economy. According to ITBAP, revenue generated from BPO is estimated to reach $25 billion which will account for approximately 10 percent of our Gross Domestic Product (GDP). To date, the BPO industry ranked next to our OFWs’ remittances in terms of foreign exchange source.

BPOs also attract investors - both local and foreign. Megaworld Corporation, the Philippine builder controlled by Andrew Tan, for example, intends to invest at least $5 billion in the next ten years “to develop properties” for the continuously growing BPO industry. Jericho Go, first vice president of Megaworld, said, “The Philippines is among the most competitive destinations for BPO. There are many US and European companies who are seriously considering setting up here.”

Significantly important is the tax collected from the BPO industry. To quote from Roberto R. Romulo’s article The Economic Footprint of BPO Industry, “…this [tax] translates to $33-billion revenue through 2016, translating to four percent percentage points in market share, giving the Philippines a solid 10-percent global market share in the BPO space. This means an incremental three billion in taxes on wages – $1.2-billion tax on wages from direct employment and $1.8-billion taxes on wages on indirect employment.”

As previously stated, the BPO industry is estimated to generate 1.3 million jobs for Filipinos in 2016 via direct employment. For jobseekers who have thought of building their career in a BPO, this is definitely a good news but what’s in it for us who are currently working in this industry? I have thought of some considerable impacts of the BPO expansion to current call center employees; however, I have decided to highlight only one aspect here to, at least, save some space. Out of many, I have chosen “career advancement.”

The expected demand for new call center employees would require additional support staff like Coaches and Operation Managers to manage day-to-day operations. Such need is definitely a great advantage for team members who want to be promoted and establish a robust career in the BPO industry.

An Eye-opener
Working in a call center industry does not only require the ability to speak English fluently. It also requires courage, passion and dedication. If you do not possess these “special qualities,” I am afraid you will not stay long in this industry. Courage is needed to face and combat the stress (well, there is no such thing as “stress-free” workplace) and the physical and mental risks that may arise from constant exposure to irate or abusive customers and graveyard shift. In a study conducted by P. Bhuyar, Associate Professor at the Department of Community Medicine at Patil Medical College in India, “the working hours of call center workers may cause sleep disturbances and disturbances in biological rhythm. Physical health may also be adversely affected due to irregular and sedentary work hours.” Passion and dedication, on the other hand, work together and both drive performance and customer-engagement. When people developed love for what they do, work becomes more than a job -- it becomes a unique calling.

Ignorance of how the call center industry operates and how we impact the economy should not be a lame excuse to degrade our job or make fun of us. If, for some reasons, this ignorance cannot be cured, try to observe and “make sense” first before uttering rude remarks about us.

Two of the best things which make a team brunch great is if you're with good people, and of course, if you have "good food." When I say "good food," I mean unforgettable gastronomic adventure - primarily because of the undeniably yummylicious and mount-watering food. It's definitely something that you cannot just simply resist!

Green Pepper's entrance.
Anyway, our invasion at Green Pepper at Ketchup Food Community here in Baguio City is definitely a great one - and, of course, a memorable one. It was my first time to have brunch with the team and it was also a celebration of Vanny's and Danica's birthday!

Yous truly with the team. In this photo: Me, July, Arlyn, Danica, Rian and Vanny. (Photo credit: Jen)
What can I say about our Green Pepper? Please check below:

The Food
The food was excellent, and just like what the team said after eating, we were satisfied. The food also arrived in a timely manner so we didn't wait "that long."

Gourmet Chicken Grill: Pan grilled rosemary chicken served with salad. Definitely a must-try at Green Pepper.
Gourmet Pork De Luxe: succulent pork with smoked barbeque sause served with salad.
Chicken N' Chips. Deep-fried breaded chicken tenders and potatoes.
Rib-eye Steak: pan-seared rib-eye with peppercorn gravy, mashed potatoes and steamed organic vegetables.
Chocolate Indulgence. A slice of moist chocolate cake, salty caramel and rich fudge frosting.
The Customer Service
Green Pepper's customer service is great. Raymond was helpful and accommodating. From 1-10, I'll rate Green Pepper's service "9" - 10 being the highest.

05.02.2014. From Matnog, Sorsogon to Sorsogon Proper, I've decided to "top-load" a jeepney for three hours. Needless to say, I had so much fun taking photos and videos of almost everything on our way. I liked almost everything but this photo of Mount Bulusan is the best! (Click here to view my latest Bicol solo-backpacking adventure)
Photo of Mount Bulusan taken on my latest Bicol escapade.
Mount Bulusan, or Bulusan Volcano, is the southernmost volcano on Luzon Island in the Republic of the Philippines. It is situated in the province of Sorsogon in the Bicol region, 70 km (43 mi) southeast of Mayon Volcano and approximately 250 km (160 mi) southeast of the Philippine capital of Manila. It is one of the active volcanoes in the Philippines.

A Creepy Experience at Pindangan Ruins in Barangay Parian

I arrived in Barangay Parian in San Fernando City, La Union past eleven in the morning and I was thankful because it wasn't raining. It was pouring cats and dogs when I left Baguio City so it was indeed a blessing that Henry isn't felt "that much" in Parian. The weather was a bit gloomy so it was very conducive for a short walk. From the National Highway, it took me approximately fifteen minutes to reach Pindangan Ruins.

That's Yours Truly at the remnant of Pindangan Churches.
When I saw Pindangan Ruins for the first time, I felt a bit weird - which I couldn't explain. I really don't know why I felt that way but I still continued with my quest. I took my camera out of my camera bag and when I had my first shot, I saw "five faces" detected. Creepy, isn't it? Nevertheless, I still pushed through. I went inside the church first and pray. After praying, I went out and checked the remnant of an old church built in May 6, 1786. I still feel weird.

The Pindangan Churches came from "Pindang" which is the local's method of drying fish. The churches symbolize the unity between two villages - the costal village of San Vicente de Balanac and the foothill village of Guillermo de Dalagdang. In 1759, an Augustinian priest, Fr. Jose Torres convinced the two settlements to come together to a place not so near the sea and not so near the mountains so they will not be plagued by their annual problems. They chose the area called Pindangan, meaning, a place where they dry fish, and this place, they built a church with San Guillermo, the Hermit, as the patron saint. In 1765, the newly assigned priest, however, suggested to the inhabitants that they replace the name Pindangan, toSan Fernando, after the Catholic King ofSpain, retaining San Guillermo as their patron saint.

How To Go To Pindangan Ruins
If you're from Baguio City, ride a Partas bus going to Loaog, Vigan or Abra. Fare as of this writing is Php104.00. Tell the conductor to drop you at Barangay Parian - a few minutes before San Fernando Plaza. If you're from Manila, you may ride a bus headed to San Fernando, Baguio City, Vigan Loaog and Abra. Private vans are also available.

Welcome to Pindangan Ruins.

I left the ruins unharmed but the "weird feeling" that I felt didn't fade until I reach the national road.

At the ruins.
The ruins is in a fragile state so climbing is strictly prohibited. Donations for its upkeep and maintenance are accepted.

Today, we attended the 3rd Baguio Blog Conference at the Mission Hall of Resurrection Church at Magsaysay Avenue and I'm pretty glad that we were able to join despite our extremely hectic schedule. On top of the actual experience of joining the conference, I also had a chance meet other Baguio and Cordillera-based bloggers. Yey! Big thanks Theresa for joining!

I rarely eat burger and I only eat if and only if I'm craving for it - but not until today. I didn't crave for one but I got one for myself. Blame it to Barneys Burger which has its grand opening today at Loakan. Lol!

Barneys Burger's grand opening today.
Yup, you read it right! Barneys Burger is now open at Loakan in front of Texas Instrument and I just tried their Classic Fully-loaded Burger.

This is what I got: Barneys' Classic Fully-loaded Burger for Php99.00. This one tastes real good. Highly recommended.
How To Go To Barneys Loakan
If you're from Baguio City Proper, look for KIAS-PMA-EPZA-bound jeepneys near Burnham Park and tell the driver to drop you at Barneys (after Sitel Baguio Site 1). Regular fare as of this writing is Php11.25. You may also hire a cab. Just tell the driver to drop you at Barneys. From town to Loakan Proper, it will cost you approximately Php90.00.

Will Wandering Pinoy Recommend Barneys Loakan?
Definitely yes! On top of their mouth-watering burgers, its customer service is also awesome! Big thanks to Venus for the warm welcome earlier.

Revisiting Barneys Burger Loakan

If there are two things which make it easier for people to continue revisiting a particular food establishment, I'll say - which I'm pretty sure you will definitely agree - it's because of good food and good customer service. I myself is an avid fan of such. And if you think about (re)visiting a place with legendary burgers plus excellent customer service, then, don't go too far. You don't need to go as far as Manila or Pampanga to experience great burgers made by cordial staff. Check out Barney Burger Loakan in front of Texas Instrument at PEZA Compound, Loakan Road, Baguio City. They had their grand opening four days ago.

With my fellow Quality Analysts during our visit at Barneys Loakan yesterday.  In this photo (l-r): Lou, Aaron, Yours Truly and Ms. Audrey Mendoza. Thank you Ms. Mendoza for the warm welcome.

My first gastronomic adventure at Barneys Loakan was pretty much a rewarding one so I thought of revisiting them - but not alone anymore. Good thing Lou and Aaron asked me to join them two days ago. Lol! And because I can't get over Barney's Classic Fully-loaded Burger (I swear this one tastes real good and the crew told me earlier that it's Barneys best-seller), I got another one for myself on top of the Junior Burger.
