Sunrise at Kapurpurawan Rock Formation in Burgos, Ilocos Norte

One of the most beautiful sunrises I have ever seen in my life. Photos below were taken at the Kapurpurawan Rock Formation in Burgos, Ilocos Norte.

Kapurpurawan Rocks are rock formations created by forces of the ocean on the rocky coast of Burgos, located just a few minutes further from the Cape Bojeador lighthouse.

The Shortcut from Cape Bojeador Lighthouse to the Highway (With Video)

When I realized that I overstayed at Cape Bojeador Lighthouse in Burgos, Ilocos Norte, I immediately went down and decided to left the place. Overstaying won't do me any good. Because there were no available tricycles for rent at the lighthouse, I decided to walk - of course alone. Fortunately, one of the vendors told me that there's a shortcut to the highway so I was relieved. I need not walk "that far." The manang told me to check the first pole  and take the "way" there down to the highway. I asked her if it's safe and she confirmed that it is so I didn't worry about climbing down there alone. Fact is,  I got more excited.

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse in Burgos, Ilocos Norte
Check this first "pole" and you'll find the way down to the highway. Thanks to the vendor for telling me the "shortcut." Estimated time to reach this from the  lighthouse: three minutes.
The way to the highway. I swear it's safe to take this route. I made it alone - safe and sound.
That's me at the "entrance" to the lighthouse after braving the  "shortcut" for the first time. I was safe, and I had so much fun.
Cape Bojeador Lighthouse, also known as Burgos Lighthouse, is a cultural heritage structure in Burgos, Ilocos Norte, that was established during the Spanish Colonial period in the Philippines. It was first lit on March 30, 1892, and is set high on Vigia de Nagpartian Hill overlooking the scenic Cape Bojeador where early galleons used to sail by. After over 100 years, it still functions as a welcoming beacon to the international ships that enter the Philippine Archipelago from the north and guide them safely away from the rocky coast of the town

Solo Backpacking Ilocos Norte: Kapurpurawan Rock Formation in Burgos

I arrived in Loaog City past four in the morning, and from  Partas Bus Station I walked for approximately twenty minutes going to the provincial capitol. I haven't been in Ilocos Norte for the past ten years so I, honestly, had no idea where is the bus station/loading station going to my first destination, the Kapurpurawan Rock Formation in Burgos. The fact that it's four in the morning and only few people are passing by made it a bit harder for me to locate it. I asked the first lady that I met but she doesn't know where it is. Good thing I met a security guard and he told me where to wait for Burgos-bound buses. He pointed his finger to a waiting shed which I honestly could not recall if it was a indeed waiting shed. The sun hasn't rose yet when I arrived in Ilocos Norte.

Before the sunrise. That's me at the entrance of Kapurpurawan Rock Formation in Burgos, Ilocos Norte. Big thanks Lagalag - Baguio for my outdoor "get-up."
I stayed at the waiting area for approximately twenty minutes. I was told that the earliest trip going to Burgos/Kapurpurawan is 8:00 am so I was worried that I might wait longer than I expected. Fortunately, a van came and when I heard the driver saying "Burgos," I immediately got up from where I sat and asked him in my crooked Ilokano "Mapan idyay Kapurpurawan? Mano ti pamasahe?" (Is this going to Kapurpurawan? How much is the fare?) I was completely relieved when the manong told me "Wen, singkwenta pamasahe."(Yes, it is. 50 pesos.) Together with the two passengers who were going to Cagayan, I jumped in to the van with so much excitement.

Sunshine in the morning. One of the most beautiful sunrises I have ever seen in my entire life (the other one is at Mount Pulag), Fees to be collected: Php5.00 for kids, Php15 for Adults, Php10 for Senior Citizens and Students, and free for differently able persons.
I could not anymore recall how long it took us to reach the entrance of Kapurpurawan (along the highway). What I can clearly recall is the excitement every time the van speeds and the thought that I will finally conquer and tick Kapurpurawan Rock Formation off my travel list. I arrived in Kapurpurawan past six in the morning, before the sunrise.
For strict compliance: no smoking, no picking of plant, no food allowed and no climbing. I followed all except for "no climbing." I thought the adventure will be incomplete if I won't climb.
I din't waste my time after taking some photos at the entrance. When I saw the tricycle which is, by the way, for rent, I asked the manong driver how much is the rent. He said it's Php300 but I bargained. I thought Php300 fare from the highway to Kapurpurawan is expensive. Fortunately, the driver agreed with my proposal: Php300 fare inclusive of a trip to Cape Bojeador, which is my second destination.

Littering in not allowed at Kapurpurawan. If you have food with you, make sure to bring a trash basket. Remember the golden rule:when travelling: Leave nothing but footprints.
The travel time from the highway to Kapurpurawan Rock Formation is more or less fifteen minutes. Expect an ongoing construction on the way. Cid told me that windmills similar to Bangui Windmills will be constructed in Burgos as well. I din't focus much of my attention to what he's saying because I was too focused taking photos but I'm glad that he's very hospitable.

Also seen at Kapurpurawan Rock Formation. I don't know how this is called but I call it "The Crocodile Warrior."
The driver stopped me at a relatively remote area and, from there, we hiked for approximately five minutes and, then, we reached my destination. It's Kapurpurawan Formation! The big white rocks greeted me, and I was totally amazed.
That's me overlooking the Bangui Bay.  Expect a "windy day" at the area.
Kapurpurawan Rocks are rock formations created by forces of the ocean on the rocky coast of Burgos, located just a few minutes further from the lighthouse. It is known for its creamy white and streamlined limestone formations, which have been sculpted by different oceanic and weather forces. Burgos is located on the northwestern tip of Ilocos Norte.

Unfortunately, it's no longer allowed to go closer to this. According to Cid, a kid fell here.
I spent most of my time taking photos at the area. As much as possible , I want to have more photos to include in my blog.
Reminds me of  Grand Canyon.
I'm on top of a big rock.
"It's the climb!" Who says climbing is not allowed? Definitely, not for me.
After some "photo-shoots," I asked Cid to bring me to Cape Bojeador. We left Kapurpurawan Rock Formation past seven in the morning.

I heard that Convergys Baguio will launch it's new site here in Baguio City. Currently, it's first site is located at Building A, Baguio-AyalaLand TechnoHub, John Hay Special Economic Zone. Solo Backpacking Ilocos Norte: Saud Beach in Pagudpud

Saud Beach in Pagudpud is probably the most popular beach destination in Ilocos NOrte. Dubbed as the "Boracay of the North," the beach has a long stretch of fine, powdery sands dotted with coconut trees which give the beach a tropical feel. Saud is nearer to Pagudupud town center compared to Blue Lagoon beach. It has a very scenic view and is often visited not just by local tourists but foreigners as well.

Kids at the scenic beach.
Saud Beach is where the action is as many of the newer and more posh accommodations are here. An hour or twoexperience at Saud Beach is something that I can treasure for a lifetime.

That's yours truly. Big thanks Lagalag Baguio for my outfit.
Saud beach is one of the best beaches to go for a summer vacation or travels when you aim to experience the best taste of rustic Philippine water. Saud caters a long white beach with no colored stains of garbage from end to end, green blooming coconut trees aligned the entire coast, local home cooked food that will let you taste the culture and the local’s way of living, lesser crowd and an affordable accommodation that offers nothing but a tranquil traveler experience.

Solo travelling? I find it exciting and "adventurous."
Unlike the more polished and crowded beach strip of Boracay, Ilocos Norte’s Pagudpud offers the more tranquil traveler a more rustic taste of Philippine waters. The northern-most stretch of Saud beach has sand as fine and white as those found in the beaches of Boracay.

Solo Backpacking Ilocos Norte: Cape Bojeador Lighthouse

From Kapurpurawan Rock Formation, it took us approximately twenty minutes to reach Cape Bojeador Lighthouse. Also located in Burgos, Ilocos Norte, Cape Bojeador Lighthouse is a cultural heritage structure in Burgos, Ilocos Norte that was established during the Spanish Colonial period in the Philippines. It was first lit on March 30, 1892, and is set high on Vigia de Nagpartian Hill overlooking the scenic Cape Bojeador where early galleons used to sail by.

I first had a glimpse of this historical landmark back in 2003 during our educational field trip in History 1 under then instructor Eric Javar of UP Baguio. During our first visit, we were allowed to climb the lighthouse - by fives if I my memory serves me right - but, due to the precautionary measures implemented by the local government, climbing is no longer allowed these days. My recent visit would have been more exciting if we were allowed to climb.

I arrived at the lighthouse early eight in the morning. Except for the vendors, the care taker and Cid, I didn't see other visitors. The care taker told me that I "was too early" which is why no one's around yet. It was only past eight when other tourists, mostly in groups unlike me, came. I joined some of them go to the century-old lighthouse.

This is the fastest way to the higway.
I stayed at Cape Bojeador for almost an hour. When I realized that I'm overstaying, I left the lighthouse as quickly as I can and I took the "shortcut" to the highway. (The shortcut was revealed to me by the vendors at the lighthouse). I arrived at the highway in less than fifteen minutes. From the highway, I rode an ordinary bus going to Bangui Windmills. Another journey has begun.

At the highway.

Team Breakfast Buffet at Kamayan sa Baguio with the New QATTs

My new website was launched at Kamayan sa Baguio a few weeks back and, due to satisfactory experience and undeniably mouth-watering food (I don't eat pork by the way), I promised myself that I'll check the place again, perhaps second week of April or last week of March. It has been planned well with the help of *totototot* so I thought I would really visit Kamayan sa Baguio come last week of March. So there!

Full force: In this photo (clockwise): Arjay, Lourdes, Mel, Aaron, Yours Truly, Joanne, Rodney, Verlin, Jacky, Ces, Theresa, Japy, Arvin, Boss Vida, Lou and David. (Photo courtesy of Theresa)
But, unfortunately, that plan was messed-up which I have no violent reaction or whatsoever at all.  Earlier today, we had a meeting and our team agreed to have brunch at Kamayan sa Baguio. See? I didn't have to wait until the end of month as previously planned. Haha!

The original QAs. In this photo (l-r): Lou, Theresa, Lourdes, Aaron, Mel, David, Arjay and Ces. Guess who's missing? Oh well, I took the photo. :)
Anyway, the "old QAs" were there plus Boss Vida and Arvin and, of course, the new QATTs. See our photos below (I swear I'll have high-level blog update about Kamayan sa Baguio in my future blog posts):
Just us: Aaron, Ces, Mel, Lou, Theresa, Yours Truly, David, Arjay and Lourdes.  Big thanks to the "lady staff" who took our photo. she's very nice.

7-Connect Sample Payment Confirmation To AirAsia

I used 7-Connect, a payment option provided by 7-eleven, for the first time and I'm glad to say that I'm very much satisfied. My credit card is not in "good standing" so the best alternative for me to pay my airline bill is via 7-Connect. 7-Eleven is almost everywhere here in Baguio and they are open 24 hours unlike banks or malls. Overall, I'm completely satisfied with 7-Connect and I will definitely recommend it to others. It's safe, secure and absolutely fast. Here's the confirmation of my 7-Connect payment to AirAsia:

Is 7-Connect payment reliable? Absolutely yes!!! Take it from my experience.

Here's a note from 7-Eleven's website: "You can now pay for online purchases at any 7-Eleven store. Just check if the site offers the 7-CONNECT payment option. There is no need for a credit card to be able to get that fantastic deal for a voucher. You don’t have to type in credit card numbers, expiry dates and billing addresses to buy something. Just write down the 7-CONNECT Reference and go the store to pay. You will be given an acknowledgement receipt and you are done. It’s that easy!

"The merchant immediately receives a confirmation of payment and can proceed to fulfill your order. Unlike a bank deposit, there is no need to fax or go to another site to complete the payment. Your merchant should be able to deliver your voucher or e-ticket within a few minutes.

Now Serving: Grumpy Joe Baguio City

$

According to my new found best friend, vocabulary.com, "grumpy" means "annoyed and irritable." For example, "when your friend suggests a restaurant but you’re in a bad mood so you say “That’s a stupid restaurant” — even though you don’t really mind it — then you’re being grumpy, meaning irritable or grouchy." So that's grumpy which reminds me always of Grumpy Joe, the newest addition to Baguio City's must-try restaurants.
Grumpy Joe is now open to serve the City of Pines. Grumpy Joe serves Pizza, Pasta, Frappes, Wings and meals.
This way to Grumpy Joe. Look at the red arrow pointing up. Climb a few steps and you'll find Grumpy Joe.
We've seen Grumpy Joe a few days back after our coffee session at Starbucks-Camp John Hay so we decided to drop by there "someday." I think I was with Aaron, Lourdes and Arjay when we saw the big Grumpy Joe sign from the cab. Earlier today, Arjay invited me to eat and when he recommended Grumpy Joe, I didn't hesitate to say "yes." I've always wanted to try new restos or cafes here in Baguio City, and Grumpy Joe is part of my "to-go-list."

Inside Grumpy Joe. Umm, let the picture talk.
We arrived at Grumpy Joe around eleven in the morning and we were surprised that they jam-packed which, I think, is probably because of the ongoing graduation ceremony. Good thing the other guests were done eating and they left so we occupied the seats near the window. I'm also glad that the waiter is kind enough to offer us the free table.

The food questors! In this photo: Yours Turly, Lourdes and Arjay.
How's The Food?
I love the food. Honestly. I have enjoyed my Grumpy Fried Chicken with Rice and Potato Salad and I also knew that Lourdes and Rjay also did. Lourdes had Combo A  (spaghetti, chicken, fries and pizza) while Arjay had Beef Calzone. I also tasted the Calzone and it tasted real good - definitely a must-try if you're planning to check Grumpy Joe. Grumpy Joes' Shirley Temple is also very refreshing.

Grumpy Joe's Menu.
My choice: Grumpy Fried Chicken with rice and potato salad.
Lourdes' pick:  Combo A includes spaghetti, Chicken, Pizza and Fries.
Arjay's choice: Beef Calzones. Highly recommended!!! A calzone is a folded pizza, usually shaped like a half-moon and stuffed with cheese and possibly vegetables, meat, and/or sauce and it can be baked or fried.
Our drinks! Our refreshers! In this photo (l-r): Raspberry tea, Shirley Temple and White Chocolate Raspberry.
How's The Place?
The place is clean but it's relatively small. I think 50 guests won't fit at Grumpy Joe so it is not highly recommended that you go there in groups unless you reserve it. Since it is crowded, expect noise, especially from kids, and a little bit "hotter" dining experience especially if the weather is hot. I didn't see any electric fans and the like in the area to, at least, "freshen up" the visitors. I think this is "understable" and "forgiveable" because Grumpy Joe started last month and they are still in the processing of "modifying" and "beatifying" the entire dining area. Well, I hope this happens and I also think it's better if Grumpy Joe will have another branch somewhere in Session Road. I think it's gonna be great.:

For all chili-lovers out there! This is extremely spicy! Haha!
How's The Service?
Our food was served faster than what I expected so I'm gonna give Grumpy Joe a "9" out of "10" - 10 being the highest. Although, the service was fast I have notice that the service crew aren't "that friendly" or "amiable" unlike other fast food chains (e.g.  Jollibee.) They lack smile - which I think is probably because they're already tired given the number of customers they've catered to prior to us. I must admit though that I like their overall customer services. They're polite, and the manager on duty (I think) is also very friendly.

Life is sublime so chill-out with a flavored frozen coffee only at Grumpy Joe!!!
The Best Sellers?
I asked the waiter (so far his the most helpful waiter) what's Grumpy Joe's best-sellers and he told me they have have "red bullets." Here's what I've got:

  • 5 Cheese Pizza - cream cheese, eden or home-made cheese, cheddar, and mozzarella in one pizza
  • Pepperoni Pizza with Jalapeno and Anchovy - tomato paste topped with Pepperoni, Jalapeno and Anchovy
  • Grumpy Joe Pizza - with pepperoni, bell pepper, mushroom, onion, tomato, pineapple tidbits, ham, ground beef, bacon and black olive
  • Marinara
  • Lasagna
  • Spicy Seafood
  • Blueberry Cheesecake - Umm, I will definitely try this in my next visit
  • Grumpy Joe Special Burger
  • Chili Dog
  • Grumpy Joe Fried Chicken
Will I Recommend Grumpy Joe?
Definitely yes! Visit them at Leonard Wood here in Baguio City, near Yamashita Japanese Restaurant. For more information about them, visit and like their official Facebook Fanpage.

Revisiting Beanstalk Baguio: A Birthday Coffee Break

My first visit at Beanstalk here in Baguio City was more than a year ago - I think a month or two after their grand opening -and that visit was truly remarkable. Reason why I blogged about my experience and even convinced some of my colleagues to visit them. Beanstalk Baguio is definitely a place where you can enjoy a relaxing coffee or tea break with your friends or college buddies at a very affordable price.

Enjoying our break. In this photo: Yours Truly, Theresa and Leah. Thanks Leah for the treat. :)
The Treat
Leah celebrated her birthday a few weeks back and she invited us for a short coffee break. Because we could not decide  where to go, she recommended Beanstalk. Considering our previous experience which was really superb, Theresa and I agreed with her immediately - no ifs, no buts or whatsoever. Aside from the fact that Beanstalk is very accessible, we are also pretty sure that we'll enjoy our stay there. From Prime Hotel here in Baguio, it took us approximately five minutes to reach Beanstalk.

Our Milk Teas: Vanilla Passion, Strawberry Caramel and Raspberry Caramel.
My choice: Danish Apple
Theresa's choice:Chocalte Mocha CAke
Another cake for Leah.
Blueberry Cupcake
If you are in Baguio and you suddenly craved for something Frappe or you want a short coffee break, Beanstalk is highly recommended. They are located at the second floor of City Center Hotel at Session Road here in Baguio City. For more information about them, kindly like their Facebook Fanpage.

Run for Mother Nature: Run for Trails 2014 by UP Baguio Mountaineers

"In 2003, the UP Baguio Mountaineers (UPBM) successfully pioneered the first trail running event in the city, in hopes that the public may find the outdoors as an alternative venue for leisure and sustainable activity. Since then, it has become a patronized annual event in Baguio City. This year will be its eleventh anniversary. The UPBM hopes that the Run for Trails 2014 will serve as both an advocacy for environmental consciousness and a gentle reminder that trail running is more than just a sport.

"This year, the event’s theme is Run for Trails 2014: Run for Mother Nature. The event is a great opportunity to honor one of the most neglected mothers, Mother Nature.

"According to statistics, a huge percentage of running events in the Philippines involves trails, but many organizers are careless in executing these trail running events, causing a huge and harmful impact on the environment. The UPBM hopes to prompt participants and organizers alike to be more mindful when carrying out and joining such events by hosting a trail run that is 100% environment-friendly. It is not enough to just appreciate the trails we run in. We must also be conscious about keeping them pristine."

The registration booth is located at the University of the Philippines Baguio woods, at the kiosk nearest to the UP main gate. The registration booth is located at the University of the Philippines Baguio woods, at the kiosk nearest to the UP main gate."
