Here are some of the photos at the ongoing 2013 UAAP Cheerdance Competition at the MOA Arena. The event is hosted by Boom Gonzales and Alex Gonzaga. Who do you think will emerge top?

1. Far Eastern University (Tron themed and masked performers)

2. University of the Philippines Pep Squad (Party-inspired performance). Ooppss...have you seen "the fall." I'm afraid UP won't make it on top this year. (After watching all the performances, I found out that UP still had the most difficult stunts.)

Let's go party!

3. University of the East Warrior (fire-themed performance)

Did you notice "the fall?"

4. De La Salle University. I'm from UP but I love the performance of La Salle. I like their outfit too. Will they make it on top this year? I think they will.

Honestly, I love the performance of La Salle. So entertaining and their outfit is absolutely fantastic.

5. National University Pep Squad (Chinese-inspired performance)

6. University of Santo Tomas Salinggawi Dance Troupe. (Major error for UST at the beginning. I hope the lady wasn't hurt). Not a good year for UST too. They had two major falls.

7. Ateneo Blue Eagles (sports themed performance). I think they had a pretty boring performance. "Too much class in the movements and routines," according to Ateneo Lady Eagles tweet.

8. Adamson University (Dora: The Explorer themed performance according to some netizens.) I agree.

The performance is over. Who will make it on top this year? My guess: UP, DLSU and NU. How about you?

One Cold Afternoon at Latreia Bookshop Cafe

Hot coffee is definitely tempting especially if the weather is like this - a cold, rainy one. It's something that you cannot resist no matter how hard you try to control yourself.

Latreia Bookshop Cafe is located at the 3rd floor of Ecco Building in Generel Luna, Baguio City.
I was craving for coffee earlier when I accidentally passed by Latreia Bookshop Cafe at Ecco Building at General Luna. Although my budget told me "Do not go there. You're broke"I still managed to drop by the place even for a few minutes. I haven't heard about the place so I thought of checking it. So far, I enjoyed the place, especially because I love books, and the Cappuccino and Chocolate Waffles that I got tasted fine. Thing is I was expecting a "bigger waffle."

Here are the top 10 best sellers at Latreia Bookshop Cafe:
  • Wintermelon Milk Tea
  • Melon Smoothie
  • Mango Smoothie
  • Okinawa Milk Tea
  • Caramel Milk Tea
  • Banana Smoothie
  • Assam Milk Tea
  • Coffe Americano
  • Hazel Nut Frappe
  • Vanilla Frappe
According to my Wikipedia, Latrīa is a Latin term (from the Greek λατρεία, latreia) used in Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic theology to mean adoration, a reverence directed only to the Holy Trinity. Latria carries an emphasis on the internal form of worship, rather than external ceremonies. Which is no wonder why books available at the bookshop are about adoration and the like. Books such as The Pursuit of God by A.W. Tozer and Transforming Grace by Jerry Bridges (Php200.00) are available at the cafe.

So you’re twenty-something like me but still can’t stop yourself from thinking like you’re a grade school kid? Hmmm, no problem. Follow these tips below, and I’m sure you’re gonna be feeling like you’re young, say only seven years old:

1. Watch cartoons. Enough of those DVD porn collections, okay? Better watch Cartoon network, Nickelodeon or Disney Channel.

2. Eat a lollipop. Got o the nearest store and buy a lollipop for your self. Choose from any of these flavors: orange, chocolate, vanilla, milk, etc. Or if lollipop is unavailable buy bubble gums. Wow!

3. Play board games with your younger siblings, nephews, nieces and neighbors. Bur please, please don’t dare cheat them. It would be too unfair.

4. Reread your favorite childhood stories. I’m pretty much you have a lot of them stocked in your closet.

5. Go to Toy Kingdom and enjoy every single moment there. Or if you want buy some robots and other kiddie stuffs for your self. Wow!

6. Check out your old toys in your closet. Play with them like you you to play with them when you’re only seven years old. Enjoy!

7. Ask your mom and dad to let you play in the rain, If they didn't allow you, cry. Hehehe!

8. Eat ice cream, candies and lots of chocolates in front of young kids. Don’t give them until they cry. Hahaha!

9. Visit the Children’s Park. You know what to do next. Just don’t let the kids cry. You’ll be punished!

Rediscovering Filipino Street Food in Baguio City

$

I think majority will agree with me if I say that street food has already been part of the Filipino lifestyle - rich or poor. While some people in other countries may prefer to eat burgers and pizzas, Filipinos, on the other hand, would go to the streets  and satisfy their "cravings" with cheap street food.
Binatog costs around Php10.00 here in Baguio City. Did I spell "binatog" correctly?
In Baguio City alone, street vendors have sprouted like mushrooms. Street foods are mostly spotted on schools, bus or jeep terminals, church, and parks. Prices of these street foods cannot go beyond 20 pesos or approximately 0.50 US dollars. Here are some of the commonly sold "street foods" here in Baguio City:

Kwek-kwek. Kwek-kewk are quail eggs dipped in an orangey batter which are deep fried and dipped in vinegar with onions and chili
Betamax. Betamax  is a grilled cubed, curdled chicken blood which is usually dipped with vinegar and onions. Honestly, I haven't tried eating this yet. I will any time soon.
And who won't forget these? Kikiam, Squid Balls and Fish Balls. So far, I like Kikiam most. It is made of ground pork and vegetables that is wrapped in bean curd sheets. It is cooked deep fried and can be paired with a sauce.
Green mangoes. Para sa mag naglilihi daw. Is this real? Green mangoes is best paired with "alamang."
Isaw. Isaw is barbecued chicken or pork intestine in bamboo skewer. This is best partnered with spicy sauce - in my opinion.
Do you have what it takes to eat these? Balot, which is usually served with rock salt, is a boiled duck egg with a developing duckling chick inside.
There are still a lot of street food sold her ein Baguio City so watch out for my blog update anytime soon. I will also include the street food "hot spots" in the city in my next post. Watch out!

If you happen to pass by Lower Mabini Street corner Diego Silang Street (especially for PNR, Loakan/Sitel and Hillside passengers) here in Baguio City, I'm pretty you have spotted a new place called "Cafe Jeepney." It used to be the location of Baguio Prism Studio. The cafe, which is operated by Cafe Jeepney, opened September 8, 2013.

Because I was looking for  a new place where I can have affordable lunch, I didn't hesitate to check Cafe Jeepney. And thank God, my stay there was not wasted. Overall, I enjoyed my stay and the food was awesome. The food (I had Bicol Express and Sayote for Php55.00) was served fast and I also love the overall customer service. Jamie, the cashier, was nice and she was very polite.

Bicol Express is Cafe Jeepney's best seller. This one tastes real good. A must-try if you'll check the place.
Cafe Jeepney is perfect for breakfast, lunch, merienda and dinner. For breakfast, you can have the regular Filipino and American breakfast. For merienda you can have Miki Guisado, Miki Bihon guisado, Sotanghon Guisado and Palabok for as low as Php45.00, good for two. The cafe also serves Lugaw, Noodles, Siomai and Siopao.

Choco-butter cake
Cakes are also available at Cafe Jeepney. When I asked what's their best-seller cake, I was told "choco-butter cake." The cake only costs Php31.00, same with Egg Pie.

Cafe Jeepney is located Lower Mabini Street corner Diego Silang Street, Baguio City. They don't have a Facebook Fanpage yet as of this writing.Check the place and see the difference.

I'm not sure if there's a list of top blogs/bloggers here in Baguio City and the Cordillera region (well..I tried googling but I didn't find any data) so I thought of coming up with a "mini-survey" that would eventually give me an idea who among the region's bloggers are leading*. I've got the blogger's list on "Cordillera Bloggers and Friends," the official Facebook group of bloggers based in Baguio and the Cordillera region. Vote now! (For "other" option, you may type the blog that you want to recommend/vote.)

Dane's Bakeshop: Where Pandesal Tastes Like No Other

$

Pandesal is a popular yeast-raised bread in the Philippines and I think majority of Filipinos have become accustomed to it as "a breakfast," together with a hot cup of brewed coffee. With this being said, it is common that each bakery sells pandesal in the morning. Pan means bread, sal is Spanish for salt. Basing from these two words, you should know that pandesal during the Spanish Era did not taste anything close to our modern day Pandesal.

Pandesal is sold at Dane's Bakeshop for Php1.50. When I first arrived here in Baguio way back 2003 to study at UP Baguio, Dane's pandesal only costs Php1.50.
I have been to many bakeshops here in Baguio City but I can say that Dane's Bakeshop has the "best pandesal" in the City. It's not too salty unlike other pandesal, and like what majority of us Filipinos say "pasok-pasok sa pansalang Pinoy ang Dane's Bakeshop pandesal."

Dane's Bakeshop is also known for its tasty and yummy breads, pastries and cakes.
Early birds at Dane's Bakeshop. Baguio City folks flock the bakeshop to get their frashly baked pandesal.
Dane's Bakeshop has branches at Chugum corner Kayang Street, Diego Sialng Street, Kayang Street, Magsaysay Street cor Rice Section and Agoo, La Union. It's main office is located at 129 Loakan Road, Baguio City.
The Diego Silang Street branch of Dane's Bakeshop.

Dane's Bakeshop also accepts bulk orders. For inquiries and to learn more about Dane's services, feel free to call them at 074-447-3536 or 074-442-6703.

The 37th National Milo Marathon, the most prestigious marathon in the country,  is slated to kick-off here in Baguio City on November 3, 2013 at 4:00 am at Burnham Park, and I'm a bit confused if I should join 21K division. Early this year, I joined the 18K division of the PhilHealth Nationwide Run and I've got "body pains" after the race. If I'll join 21K division come next month, I wonder what will I get. I'm really scared of getting those "body pains" again which, if I can recall clearly, can last up to 5-6 days. Imagine that? Anyway, I'll finalize my decision anytime this week.

Public Advisory: Beware of D' Avis Taxis/Cabs

I was Facebooking earlier when I saw this post. I thought of sharing this for the safety of all ladies out there.

"Ladies, if you ride cabs often at whatever time of the day, please TAKE EXTRA CARE. DO NOT ride D'AVIS cabs to save your life. ALWAYS READ the posts...on Facebook so you would know the M.O.'s of the cab drivers. That's exactly how I detected that something was wrong while I was inside the cab. I read a post on facebook about a lady who had a horrifying experience with an old cab driver and his hanky/wash cloth modus operandi. This is what happened to me:

Securit advisory from Shell
"I hailed the dreaded DAVIS cab along H.V. Dela Costa St., around 5:15 p.m. today on my way to another recording in a studio along Amorsolo St., roughly 5-10 mins. away. Upon boarding, nothing seemed wrong except the way the old man drove. He seemed a little 'off', taking his sweet time and then suddenly jolting to speed up. I chalked up his driving skills to his age, since he was around 60-70 years old. The next thing I noticed was a plastic bottle on the floor beside the driver's seat. I had a hunch that I was in for something unpleasant but chose to sit still and continue my ride. Another 5 mins. more and things started to get shady. Out of nowhere, the driver took out a red, worn-out wash cloth ('bimpo') and started playing with it. He kept twirling it in front of the aircon, and would at times act as if he was drying it. I already knew that it was the same MO the other lady victim experienced.

"My first reaction was to open my window so I could at least delay the effect of the drug until I found the best time to get off. He saw me open the window and continued twirling the cloth in front of the aircon with more urgency. I was slowly feeling the effects of the drug: my lungs were slowly relaxing, my breath was starting to get shallow making it harder to breathe, my throat felt like it was closing in, my legs were starting to feel numb and the sensation of immobility was creeping in. It's similar to what you feel when you're under general anesthesia. At that point, in between the intersection of Ayala and Dela Costa, the driver leaned sideways (covering the gap between the two seats) and was fiddling with something (not really sure what) in front of the aircon.

"At this time, I really felt like it was now or never. I got P100 from my wallet and semi-handed/threw the money in front and told him, "Ito bayad mama, baba na ako." While doing this, my other hand was already opening the door of the cab in the middle of the Ayala intersection. I didn't care if the cab was still moving, I JUST HAD TO GET OFF. Thank God that traffic was a bit congested and the driver had no choice but to slow down. He tried to stop me and said, "Bawal bumaba diyan! Mahuhuli ako!" In my mind, "Mabuti na yun, kaysa mamatay ako!".

"When I finally got out, my knees and legs felt like jell-o. I had to muster enough strength not to collapse in the middle of Ayala. That's when it hit me - I really had a close call. God knows where I'd be if I didn't get out of the cab just in the nick of time. Praise God for His protection and His guidance. Thank God for sparing me from a horrifying ordeal in the hands of opportunists.

"It pays to be aware, informed and alert. I hope sharing this experience will prevent more women from falling prey to the hands of scheming people. Have a safe and blessed night. Take extra care, dear friend."

Earlier today, I wrote that I need to contemplate first if I should join the 21K division of the 37th National Milo Marathon or not. Considering the possible effects of joining the 21K division, I have decided to join the 5K division instead. If you can still recall, I narrated here on my blog that I had "body pains" which lasted for more than 5 days when I joined the 18K division of the PhilHealth Nationwide Run first quarter of this year. I don't want to experience the same.

I Have "ISTJ Personality" According to 16 Personalities Test

$
0
0
I took the personality test today courtesy of "The 16 Personalities" and I discovered that I have ISTJ Personality. See my result below:

ISTJ personality type is the second most popular one (11.6% of the U.S. population). “Only the facts, please” is their motto – ISTJ personalities respect facts greatly and tend to accumulate a lot of information in their own memory. One of the key contributing factors is their S trait, which allows ISTJs to analyse the surroundings quite effortlessly.

At Bakhaw Beach at Camotes Island, Cebu.
Due to their straightforward approach, ISTJs may encounter difficulties when it becomes necessary to comprehend a competing theory or idea. However, people with this personality type are nearly unstoppable if they believe that a specific idea is valuable and can be implemented – they will consider it their duty to establish and maintain a smooth operation. As soon as the new procedure proves its usefulness (i.e. it becomes apparent that the new approach actually works), ISTJs will put a lot of effort to enable its successful implementation, even at the expense of their own health.

ISTJs tend to be extremely thorough, always checking the facts and not assuming anything. ISTJs are also respected for their exceptional loyalty to their duty – their accuracy, patience and ability to concentrate make them ideal employees in many professions. Not surprisingly, people with this personality type gravitate towards traditional, hierarchical institutions – public service, law, military etc.

ISTJ personalities spend an enormous amount of time and energy performing every task they see as important, especially it contributes to the achievement of a specific goal. However, such a commitment also has a negative side – an ISTJ will refuse to budge and spend at least some of their time doing things that they do not see as meaningful or practical, e.g. some social rituals. ISTJ personalities prefer to do things alone, but can also work as part of a team if necessary.

ISTJs enjoy being responsible for their actions and love the power that stems from this. They are usually jacks-of-all-trades and this can potentially lead to many significant achievements in diverse areas – ISTJs tend to be bright, logical and wise individuals, characterized by their desire to seek secure and stable life.

Like other introverted personalities with a well-developed T trait, ISTJs are often (mistakenly) seen as indifferent and cold. Of course, it is understandably difficult for an ISTJ to reveal their emotions or express affection, but that does not mean that they have no feelings or are insensitive.

ISTJs are easily irritated by other people’s shortcomings – they see their own promises as sacred and cannot understand how someone could consciously fail to meet their obligations. This can be a significant disadvantage at times, as some people can abuse the ISTJ’s strong sense of duty by overloading them with work.

ISTJ personalities tend to keep their opinions to themselves, unless someone asks them directly. People with this personality type are very direct – for them, the truth is always far more important than sensitivity. This ruthless judgment is irreplaceable in refereeing or legal work – where other people might waver, the ISTJ will make the difficult decision while ignoring the emotional background.

ISTJs respect traditions and do their best to adhere to the existing rules and guidelines. In some cases, this trait can be so strong that the ISTJ will not break the rules even when the consequences for breaking them pale in comparison to what would happen if those rules were followed.

ISTJs are not particularly good at listening to their own (and especially other people’s) feelings. Consequently, they may face difficulties when it is necessary to understand other people’s emotional needs. On the other hand, ISTJs rarely have any difficulties coping with emotionally charged situations – they can always keep a cool head and act rationally."

Personality traits explained:

Extraverted (E) - Expressive, outgoing, prefer group activities, eager to speak their minds, more comfortable when around other people than when alone, get energized by social interaction

Introverted (I) -   Reserved, listen carefully, prefer solitary activities, more comfortable when alone than when around other people, get exhausted by social interaction

Intuitive (N) -   Introspective, rely on their imagination, absorbed in ideas, focus on what might happen

Sensing (S) - Observant, rely on their senses, absorbed in practical matters, focus on what has happened

Thinking (T) - Tough, follow their minds, suppress feelings, focus on objectivity and rationality

Feeling (F) - Sensitive, follow their hearts, keep feelings close to the surface, focus on harmony and cooperation

Judging (J) - Decisive, prefer clear rules and guidelines, eager to commit, see deadlines as sacred, seek closure

Perceiving (P) - Probing, prefer keeping their options open, reluctant to commit, relaxed about their work, seek freedom.

Due to the unlikely weather condition brought by typhoon Nari, our team building didn't push through in Candelaria, Zambales (as far as I can recall, Zambales was under signal number 2) so we ended up having our meeting at Paradiso Beach Resort in Aringay, La Union (I was able to join...and I'm thankful that we had a safe trip). It's my first time to check the place, and I find it just fine. Anyway, I'll be writing more about our team building anytime soon, probably on Tuesday or Wednesday. I  can't clearly think of something to write right now perhaps because I still feel dizzy (courtesy of too much drinking...and a little bit of "emo" mode...now I feel shy...)

As promised in my previous entry, I will be writing more about our team building and strategic planning held at Paradiso Beach Resort in La Union two days ago. Although I honestly admit that I didn't like the place much (especially the men's shower room and the beach), I'm glad that we had fun, and the plan was successful. Here are some of the photos (big thanks to Lou and Theresa) taken at the said event:

Full force: The QAs with our new boss. In this photo: Boss Twinkle, Lou, Lourdes, Arjay, David, Jessa, Aaron, Nelson, Mhel, Yours Truly, Blair, Erl, Theresa and Patty. The team building was fun and we got to learn more about the other side of our new boss. I didn't know that she sings a lot. Haha!

Sleepy head on our way to Aringay, La Union. We left Baguio around five in the morning. In this photo: Lourdes, Nelson, Arjay, David and Yours Truly. Good thing I was able to join the team building.

Arrival at Aringay Public Market. It took us approximately one hours to reach Aringay, La Union. This photo was taken before we went to the public market.

Photo taken in front of The Generics Pharmacy in Aringay, La Union. Still looking fresh despite the travel time and the shift. In this photo: Jessa, Arjay, Yours Truly, Boss Twinkle, Aaron, Theresa, Lourdes, David, Nelson and Mhel.

The facade of Aringay Public Market. We had our "wet shopping" here and I enjoyed it. Haha! The price of commodities here are lower than Baguio City's.

Arrival at Paradiso Beach Resort. In this photo: Lou, Yours Truly, Boss Twinkle, Theresa, Lourdes and Arjay. We stayed at the dormitory type accommodation.

The pool at the Paradiso Beach Resort. How I wish Paradiso's Management will always make sure that the pool is kept cleaned. The "6ft area" has a lot of dirt when we checked the place.

At the pool. In this photo: Nelson, David, Blair, Erl, Boss Twinkle, Yours Truly, Theresa and Lourdes. One thing I'd like to recommend is the Paradiso's management should make sure that the pool is kept clean.

The beach! Aside from the cool breeze in the afternoon, there's nothing more I can recommend about the beach located a few meters away from Paradiso Resort.

The "mini-pond" at the back of our room. I find this kinda cool. Good thing there are no mosquitoes here.

The resort has a "mini-bar" where guests can have videoke and wine. They also sell ice cream. Thing is the prices at the resort are "doubled." For example, a chocolate ice cream cone costs Php45.00 at the resort but it only costs Php25.00 ouside. Or, say, an eight ounce coke costs Php20.00 at the resort but it is sold for only Php7.00 outside. The resort is not really a first class resort so my recommendation is its management should review the prizes of what their selling at the mini-bar. Hello?

That's my fellow Quality Analyst Nelson singing 21 Guns by American punk rock band Green Day. He sings pretty good. I like his voice. By the way, I don't sing well but I sang "Everything I Own" by Bread.  Part of its lyrics goes this way: "You taught me how to love...what it's all, what it's all..."

Playing billiards? Nope, it's not what you think it is. Lol! In this photo: David, Erl, Patty, Arjay, Aaron, Yours Truly, Lourdes, Theresa, Nelson, Mhel, Boss Twinkle and Lou.

Just the three of us. That's Yours Truly, Lourdes and Blair after swimming. Blair now works with Workforce.

My thoughts on recommending the resort? Ye I will, considering accommodation (affordable) and customer service (well, Rochelle Hugo and the other staff of the resort were really nice.) When it comes to serenity of the place, the pool and the beach, I will not.
