Notes from Our Puerto Galera Escapade 2015 Part I

Amos, Wynn and I left Baguio City despite the sudden drop of its temperature. The undeniably cold weather of the City of Pines could not stop us. No one can stop us. Everything has been planned and set!

Baguio to Cubao to Batangas to Puerto Galera Expedition
We left Baguio past nine in the evening via Victory Liner. Our original plan was to take a Pasay-bound bus but due to the trip schedule, we took a Cubao-bound bus instead. We paid Php445.00 for the fare and we reached our destination past three in the morning. From Victory Liner Terminal in Cubao, we walked to look for Batangas-bound buses and, fortunately, we quickly found ALPS The Bus Incorporated (I later learned that ALPS is owned by Perez family from Dagatan, Batangas). We paid Php164.50 for the fare and it took us around two to three hours to reach Batangas Port. The trip would have been shorter if not because of the stop-overs.
On our way to Batangas Port. Wynn inside an air-conditioned ALPS bus.
We arrived at Batangas Port past six. We were approached by some locals there who told us that they were "assistants," offering us tickets to Puerto Galera. They were nice but, frankly, this annoyed me a bit because I'm pretty much sure we can manage ourselves. One of the "assistants" brought us to Father 'n Son Lines and we were offered a promo round trip ticket for only Php500.00. After careful review of the tickets offered, we paid Php1500.00 and immediately left the ticket booths. Another "assistant" approached us, asking me to give him Php90.00 for the terminal fee. I told him that we can manage ourselves and he left us. We went to the "Terminal Fee"booth and we paid the exact amount.

It's blurry. Arrival at Batangas Port. In this photo: Amost, Wynn and Yours Truly
Right after paying the terminal fee, we went to Terminal 3, where we waited for at least two hours for the White Beach Bound speed boat (I thought we're going to ride a RoRo like we did in Cebu). If my memory serves me right, we left Batangas Port past eight in the morning .

The speed boat that will bring us to Puerto Galera.
From Batangas Port, the speed boat brought us to Sabang Port. After a 10-minute stop-over at Sabang Port, we headed to White Beach. We were starving when we arrived at White Beach because it was past eleven and we haven't eaten yet.

Stop-over at Sabang Port.

At White Beach
White Beach is one of the most visited spots in Puerto Galera because of its prestine white beach. Although I must admit that Potipot Island in Zambales and Bakhaw Beach in Camotes Island have pretty much better white sand than White Beach's, still I loved the place.

We arrived at White Beach via free shuttle provided by Father 'n Son Lines past eleven in the morning. As mentioned earlier, we were starving so when the locals met us, offering us accommodation, we told that that we want the cheapest one so we don't need to decide and brainstorm so we can eat. The lady offered us a Php1200.00/night room but we declined it. We asked for the Php1000.00/night accommodation instead. It has two big bedrooms, own C.R. with hot shower, TV with cable and an aircon.

Groufie after paying our accommodation at Cafe de Paris.
We paid Php2000 for our three days and two nights accommodation (I later learned that the place is called "Cafe de Paris and it's owned by Mr. Roger De Paris – a french Expat). Pretty much, we've got an affordable place to stay for three days. After settling the payment, we looked for a resto where we can eat. We found White Beach Resort Resto Bar and Restaurant.

After eating, we went back to our rooms and we took a quick rest, then, we decided to swim and enjoy the hot, sunny day.

Time to get tanned. At White Beach. Yours Truly with my workmate Amos.
With Wynn.
We stayed at the beach for a couple of hour for two to three hours , enjoying every single view, and after some photo shoots, we went back to our room and we slept for a couple of hours.

Sunset in Puerto Galera. Photo taken by Amos.
I was told about the fire dancing at White Beach so I made sure that my alarm clock is set to wake us up. Unfortunately, I woke up around six in the afternoon so I missed the sunset. (to be continued)

Panagbenga or the Baguio Flower Festival is fast approaching, and I'm pretty sure a lot of visitors will be here again. Aside from watching the Grand Float Parade and the Grand Street Dancing Parade, here are some activities that you can do in Baguio City during the flower festival:

1. Indulge in an aromatic coffee break or a frappe break at Beans Talk Bistro. Skip your favorite Starbucks coffee and try something new this Panagbenga. Visit Beanstalk Baguio. Located at City Center Hotel at Session Road, the cafe is perfect for viewing the Grand Street Dancing Parade and the Grand Float Parade and they've also got affordable frappes. Who knows it might be a hot day during the parade and a cold frappe is just perfect for you!  Try also their Cinnamon Bun.

2. Enjoy a hot bath at Pooten Resort. Located at KM.16 Asin road, Nangalisan, Tuba, Benguet, this Malacanang Palace-inspired resort is only 30 minutes drive from Baguio City. My friends and I had fun when we visited this place and I'm pretty sure you will as well. You can also stay overnight here with your friends or family. According to Doc Fun: "The hotel is like a Malacanan Palace in seclusion. I had the opportunity of visiting this beautiful place together with my colleagues on a conference of systematic biologists." For inquires and details please visit Pooten Resort's website: http://pootenresort.uklwd.net/. You can also visit my blog post about Pooten Resort by clicking here.

Sunset at Mount Santo Tomas.
5. Freshen up yourself at Zen Tea. With millions of visitors in the City, a relaxing tea break is pretty much needed. Grab a cup of cold tea at Zen Tea! Visit them at the roof-deck of Porta Vaga Commercial Center (near the Baguio Cathedral).

6. Read books at Under the Tree Bookcafe while enjoying your favorite coffee.  My initial reaction when we entered Under the Tree, a "bookcafe" located at Baden Powell Hotel," was "Hmmm...I didn't know that this exists." Because I'm an occasional "book-lover", I've quickly developed "love" for this place. under the Tree is definitely perfect for book-lovers. Under the Tree BookCafe is located at #26 Baden Powell Inn, Governor Pack Rd., 2600 Baguio City.

7. Try Ukay-ukay or Wagwag at Harrison Road at night. Life in Baguio doesn't end after the sun sets. The night market will always be an attraction for tourists and locals. On top of ukay-ukay, you may also try some street food - a "goto" under the G-shaped overpass is  must! We've tried it before and I loved the experience.
Cheap clothes for sale at the night market here in Baguio City.
8. Try Canopy Ride at Camp John Hay. Enjoy your first Canopy Ride in the City of Pines! Ucab in Itogon, Benguet is Like Heaven To Me

As planned, I visited Ucab in Itogon, Benguet today for a  "business-related" issue. I thought it's just going to be a regular visit but I was wrong. I didn't expect that Ucab has one of the most beautiful "cloud formation" in the Cordilleras. I felt like I can touch the clouds! See photos below:

Beautiful, isn't it?
Amazing, isn't it?
I couldn't help but take photos of the clouds. I was totally amazed!
Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Ucab, Itogon.
Small-scale mining in Ucab, Benguet.
Ucab Barangay Proper.  Make sure you look for this spot if you want to go back to Baguio. A lot of Baguio-bound jeepneys pass by here.
How to go to Ucab in Itogon, Benguet
From Baguio City, ride an Ucab-bound jeepney located at the "shoppers lane"in front of the Baguio Center Mall. If in doubt, ask the barkers and tell them that you are going to Ucab. Fare as of this writing is Php20.00. Travel time is 25 minutes.

Baguio's Buffet Republic: Of Disappointment and Overcooked Colli Beans and Chicken Tinola

Wynn and I decided to visit Buffet Republic a few days ago with high hopes that we will be delighted and satisfied. "Buffet"sounds good to me, and because I have visited some hotels here in Baguio offering buffet, I had high expectations that Buffet Republic will also offer the same. I was wrong - which brought me back to the old days when a friends of mine told me "do no not expect too much if you do not want to be disappointed."

My lunch is a combination of Seafood Curry and overcooked Chicken Tinola and Colli Beans and Papaya and Fruit Salad.
Needless to say, our experience at Buffet Republic was a disappointing one - although we're happy with the customer service (especially Jamela. She's nice and she took our photo) and we were "full"when we left.
"Full"but disappointed. Wynn and I after eating. Thanks Jamela for taking our photo.

The Disappointment
Wynn and I arrived at Buffet Republic located at the 2nd Floor of Citylight Tower (beside Baguio Centr Mall) past one in the afternoon. We were gladly greeted by one of their staff and we paid Php180.00 each for the lunch buffet. We, then, got "stamped" on our wrist and we were asked to enter. Curious as to what Buffet Republic has to offer us, we immediately went over the food displayed. If  my memory serves me right, they got Seafood Curry, Spareribs in A1 Sauce, Chicken Tinola, Dinuguan, Colli Beans with White Sauce, Kilawin, Chicken Feet and Vermicelli Soup. For dessert, they've got assorted fruits and fruit salad. I love their fruit salad - fact is, I enjoyed it so much. My disappointment was pretty much caused by overcooked Chicken Tinola and Colli Beans. I'm not trying be harshed but their Chicken Tinola and Colli Beans were "like" heated several times and served again. The tinola looked uninviting but I still eat it because I was hungry and I don't want to pay additional fees for not "consuming" what I've got.

Another thing that I didn't like which Wynn has agreed is the plate. I hope they've got better plates. It will be a lot better if they'll have white "porcelain" plates.

The Customer Service
One thing that I liked about Buffet Republic is customer service. They've got polite and accommodating staff. they are friendly and i like the "smiles" on their faces. Special thank to Jamela for taking our photo.

The Price
Php180.00 for a lunch buffet is reasonable as long as they don't have overcooked Tinola and Colli Beans. Compared to other establishment offering buffet, I think they've got the lowest and most affordable price.
Buffet Republic is on promo: Breakfast, Lunch and Merienda.
The Location and Ambiance
Buffet Republic is accessible although the view outside is not conducive if you're goal is to relax while eating. If you're going to look at the glass window, you'll see congested houses and establishments everywhere. Buffet Republic is spacious but they need to focus on their interior design. I felt like I was just like eating at the pantry of my current workplace when we went to Buffet Republic (to my workmates: I'm sure you'll have an idea what it's like)

Inside Baguio's Buffet Republic
Inside Buffet Republic. Remember: lights can be deceiving.
Buffet Republic is located at the second floor of CityLight Tower, Bonifacio Street. Corner Dagohoy Street, Baguio City (beside Baguio Center Mall). They are open from 06:00am to 06:00 pm. As of this writing, I learned through their FB Fanpage that they have extended their promo.

Looking for Buffet in Baguio? Visit Elements at New Town Plaza Hotel

After watching Jupiter Ascending  last Saturday, we decided to visit Elements at New Town Plaza Hotel as planned. We tried their Merienda Buffet. New Town Plaza Hotel is one of the newest hotels in Baguio City which offers "a twist of modern dining."

The Search for Elements
From SM City Baguio, it took us approximately ten minutes to reach New Town Plaza Hotel. We were lucky enough because the place isn't difficult to find and we're even luckier because an elevator is ready to take us to the roof top of   where Elements is located. A lady at the "entrance" ( but I assumed it's the exit) gladly welcomed us and she told us to "hang the receipt on our table" as proof of purchase. We also got "stamped" which means that we're "admitted." We searched for a perfect spot inside Elements and, fortunately, it didn't take us "long." We found a vacant table where the "hearts" were hanged in preparation for the Valentine's day. For me, it was a perfect spot because (1) I can freely take photos from where I seated and (2) if we're seated "there," it will not be too obvious if we keep on going back with our plates full of "meriendas" (Lol...I mean...no one can resist Element's irresistible and mouth-watering merienda. It will definitely keep you "going back.")

The Place
Elements will definitely offer you a very relaxing environment and comfort. It's a home away from home. No wonder why it's visited by many, especially by those who want to experience a"twist of modern dining."
Elements is located near the pool area of New Town Plaza Hotel. Look for this spot and you won't be lost. In case you're lost, ask.
The Food
I liked almost everything at Elements except for the Dinuguan because I have stopped eating pork. O've tried alsmost everything that was served on the the day we visited Elements but I spent of my time eating Pancit Bihon because it was definitely "yummylicious," and I (I just recalled) haven't eaten Pancit Bihon for the longest time. Lol! I've also tried their Lelot Balatong and all sorts of desserts which I couldn't clearly recall now. After our "merienda official" inside Elements, we went out and had "coffee break" beside the pool area.

The Customer Service
Elements' staff are very accommodating and nice. They will not ignore you if you have a special request. I would like to use my blog's space to commend Stephanie and Julius for their hospitality and for being nice to us during our stay - and to Jestoni as well who was "all smile" while cleaning the table near us. Great customer service is definitely an add-on for me to recommend a particular resto or cafe, and because Elements has great and well-mannered staff, I'm of course recommending them,
Enjoying our second batch of "deleactables." In this photo: Amos, Yours Truly, Theresa, Wynn and Leah. Big thanks Stephanie for taking our photo.
The Price
Php180.00 for a Merienda Buffet in an elegant hotel is definitely worth it and, just like what I always say, worth blogging for. You will definitely have a lot of options at Elements. Your Php180.00, like what I told a colleague of mine who is also planning to visit Elements, is "sulit na sulit."
Coffee break beside the pool after our "merienda official." Big thanks to Julius for taking the photo.
How to go to Elements at New Town Plaza Hotel
If you're in town or Session Road, tell the cab driver that New Town Plaza is located in from of the Baguio Botanical Garden ( take note of the intersection). If you're planning to ride a jeepney, take a Mines View (jeepney station is in front of Danes Bakeshop) jeepney and tell the driver to drop you by at Botanical Garden. Regular fare as of this writing is Php8.50.
Once you've reached Botanical Garden, look for this building. You're definitely on the right track.
Elements at New Town Plaza Hotel is located at 42 C.M. Recto St. corner Leonard Wood Road, 2600 Baguio City. They also serve Breakfast and Dinner Buffet. For inquiries and to learn more about New Town Plaza Hotel, please call 074-422-0058 or visit their Facebook Fanpage.

The Great Escape to Hundred Islands in Alaminos City, Pangasinan

Our initial plan is to visit Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro but due to tight staffing, we ended visiting Hundred Islands in Alaminos, Pangasinan - which I think is also a blessing in disguise because I  thought it's quite perfect for a team building, awarding and other activities. I was pretty much delighted when the team agreed to go there instead of traveling roughly ten hours going to Puerto Galera. We rented a van and it only took us roughly four hours to reach Alaminos Tourism Office. The trip was pretty much awesome.
Meet our Team! (Photo credit: Jen)
Hundred Islands or Kapulo-puloan/Taytay-Bakes in Pangasinense is a protected national park in Alaminos City, with islands totaling 124 at low tide and 123 at high tide. I learned about the place back in my elementary days in Bicol so when I relocated here in Baguio to study at UP, I considered it part of my travel wishlist.
It's boarding time. We used this motor boat going to the Quezon Island. Photo credit: Mia

The New Policy at Alaminos City Tourism Office
The Alaminos City Tourism has implemented a new regulation regarding motorboat reservation so we had to follow it. The new policy states "In relation to the implementation of the City Ordinance No 2013-10, otherwise known as the Alaminos City Tourism Code of 2013, effective February 1, 2015, the City Tourism Office will strictly implement NO MOTORBOAT RESERVATIONS among motorboat associations. All walk-in guests who are not staying in hotels/transients/homestays must get their motorboat/s lined up at the City Tourism Office." Our original plan is to just rent a boat going to Governor's Island but it didn't push through due to the said policy.

At the City's Tourism Office we were oriented about the new pricing plus the do's and don'ts. We paid Php80.00 for the environment fee and Php3300.00 for the boat which is good for our round trip transpo and island hopping. Original cost is Php3500.00. The new pricing surprised us big time because we were expecting  around Php1500.00 for the boat fare alone.

The Boat Expedition
Although there were some gigantic waves that greeted us on our way to Quezon Island - which significantly increased my body's insulin level - the ride was still amazing and I'm glad that everyone arrived safe. We're fortunate that our bangkero who's probably at his late 40s is an experienced driver. Travel time from the Tourism Office is approximately thirty minutes.
Smile is all over despite the rippling waves. (Boat owner should change their life jackets because some were torn and I don't think they will still function properly.) Photo credit: Jen.
We arrived at Quezon Island past five in the afternoon. We approached an old man (I forgot his name) and we showed him the receipt as instructed by Reymalyn at the tourism office. After reviewing our receipt, he also informed us about the do's and don'ts at the  island. He told us that eating "just anywhere" at the island is prohibited so we got a table for Php300.00  where we can eat. He also suggested to pitch our tent (Php200/tent) near the shoreline.  We did what he exactly had told us, and before the sun set our tent was all set and all good! After fixing our tent, we started cooking for dinner and we were done by around eight in the evening.
Sunset at Hundred Islands. Amazing, isn't it?
Our home for our overnight stay.
After some photo shoots, the team decided to sleep but I stayed at the beach for a while and swam despite the relatively cold water. I had so much fun swimming but when I noticed that everyone's preparing to sleep and the lights at the second floor of the building where we had our dinner were turned off, I left the sea and prepared myself to sleep. I decided to pitch another tent for Mia and Paul so that they will be comfortable sleeping. I set-up my alarm clock and slept - extremely excited of what awaits us the following day. (to be continued...)

We woke up the following day as early as four in the morning. After listening to Get Ready For It(credit song in the movie Kingsman: The Secret Service) by the band Take That, I got up from my sleeping bag and went to the beach and jogged. It was a bit cold and dark. The ladies prepared our breakfast and, by six, our breakfast was all set.The bangkero and our tour guides arrived as early as seven so we invited them to join us.

Team breakfast. In this photo (l-r): Arlyn, Danica, Mia, Paul, Yours Truly, Donna, Jen, Glaiza and Gail. Photo taken by Hannah.
Breakfast with our tour guides (Balong, wearing yellow shirt) and Quezon Island staff (Kuya Ted wearing red shirt). Kuya Ted told me before we left that we can contact him again if ever we'll visit Hundred Islands again so he can prepare fresh fish for us. He was kind!
After our breakfast, we started our activities and awarding ceremony.

It's absolutely awesome and eggsciting. Team Scarambled and Team Unbreakable showcasing their "finished product." Their goal is "not to break" the egg inside if they throw it from the third floor of the building.
The competition has started! Team 1 with their parachute-inspired safety gear to protect their egg  is thrown away from the third floor of the building. Their egg didn't break and they  won!
A simple yet memorable awarding and recognition activity for the team.
After the awarding ceremony, we started swimming. The sand was white and fine and the water was crystal-like. We also tried ziplining for Php100/head.

Time to swim at Quezon Island.
Powdery white sand? Check! Clear water? Check!

First batch! We're all set for the zip lining. In this photo: Arlyn, Paul, Gail, Danica, Hannah and Yours Truly.
Smile and the world will smile at you. That's me after ziplining. Happy? Absolutely!
After zip lining and some rest, our team left and we began with our Island Hopping. From Quezon Island, we visited Marcos Island where the cave is located.

Yours Truly at Marcos Island enjoying the clear and refreshing water.

Our team at Marcos Island. In this photo: Mia, Paul, Jen, Donna, Glaiza, Danica, Arlyn, Gail, Hannah and Yours Truly.
The bats inside the cave located at Marcos Island.
At Marcos Island, I realized that I forgot my Cristiano Ronaldo's (CR&) short so I asked the bangkero to bring us back to Quezon Island so I can get it back. Fortunately, the bangkero agreed and I was so happy that I got my CR7 back.  From Quezon Island, we hurdled again the rippling waves going to Cuenca Island.

A view of some of the Islands on our way to the cave at Marcos Islands.
At Cuenco Island and Cuenco Tunnel.
At Cuenco Island. For those who are planning to stay at this island, cottage rental is Php500.00 as of this writing.
We stayed at the Cuenco Tunnel at Cuenco Island for a few minutes and we headed right away to the Children's Island then Governor's Island. We learned from our Balong that it's called Children's Island because of it's shallow water. Governor Island, on the other hand, has a view deck which is perfect for viewing the islands and islets.

It says "This way to the view deck area." Ziplining is also offered near the view deck area for as low as Php250.00 per head as of this writing.
On our way to the view deck. It took us several minutes to reach the view because it's elevated and situated a few meters away above the shorline.
As seen from the view deck. Awesome, isn't it?
Our team at the view deck.
We left Hundred Islands past twelve in the afternoon and we reached the Alaminos Tourism Office around one. We took a bath at the shower area near the tourism office for Php10.00. Our van arrived around two and we left as soon as possible. We arrive in Baguio past five in the afternoon. By the way, I learned during our visit that the islands at Hundred Islands were named after the last name of Philippine presidents and some prominent "last names" in the Philippines. I've seen Macapagal Island, Lopez Island and Marcos Island to name a few. (Note: Big thanks to Jen and Gail for some of the photos.)

Bay Leaf Restaurant by Cris d' Cuisine Food Escapade

Before our scheduled “movie time," Amos, Wynn and I decided to eat first but food establishments at SM City Baguio were crowded so we had no choice but look for a different place where we can eat comfortably. First, we visited Patch Café located at Bloomfield Hotel but they don’t have rice – we didn’t see and we didn’t bother to ask - so we left immediately and walked further – so imagine how tired we were. We passed by the BIR building located just below DSWD and when we went up and reached the intersection, we’ve noticed a resto called Bay Leaf. I haven’t heard of Bay Leaf until that day so I asked Amos and Wynn if they’re "ok" to eat there. Fortunately, my buddies agreed.

The Customer Service
Except for the lady in white uniform,” (I asked her about Bay Leaf’s hours of operation but I only got a stare from her. I guess she’s an intern or she could be the owner. Good thing the other lady responded on her behalf so I got relieved. You know, it’s painful to be ignored, and to ease the pain I convinced myself that she’s new and she’s shy to respond) everyone at Bay Leaf was accommodating and nice. They were polite and they’re always “on the go” for our requests. On top of these, they also served our food quick which is just timing because we were starving. (We visited Bay Leaf February 14 of this year.)

The Food
I like their food and their serving is more than what I expected. We tried Beef Steak Overload and Butterscotch Cheese Cake.
Beaf Steak Overload costs Php158.00.
Our free dessert which is also served together with our Beef Steak Overload
Beef Steak Overload is also served with free drinks. It tasted like honey.
Butterscotch Cheese Cake costs Php40/order.
The Price
Bay Leaf Restaurant by Chris d' Cuisine definitely offers affordable yet yummy meals - reason why I highly recommend them.
Main course, burgers and sandwiches, drinks, coffee and dessert.
Appetizers, Soups, Salads and Pasta and Noodles.
The Place
The place is quite and comfortable which is why I highly recommend it. They also have a Salad Bar where you and your friends can have "do it yourself salad" for sharing for as low as Php240.00.
Bay Leaf has red chairs.
Bay Leaf's Salad Bar.
According to its Facebook Page, Bay Leaf Restaurant by Chris d' Cuisine is a "a game changing restaurant in the Culinary Industry that aims to satisfy its customers' passion for food by serving sumptuous combinations of Asian and Western Cuisine, freshly cooked to perfection."
We look exhausted after walking from SM to Bay Leaf.
How to go to Bay Leaf Restaurant by Chris d'Cuisine
Bay Leaf Restaurant by Chris d' Cuisine is located at #80, Dela Cruz Building, North Drive Baguio City. From the central business district, you may hire a cab and tell them to drop you near PAG-IBIG (most noticeable landmark just in case the cab driver isn't familiar with Bay Leaf yet.) You may also ride a jeepney going to Mines View. Tell the drive to drop you at PAG-IBIG.

Pamana Restaurant Baguio and the Disappointment

If there's one thing that would definitely influence me to highly recommend a particular resto or cafe, I'd say it's customer service. Customer service plays an important role in customer satisfaction and, consequently, the growth of the business. The more customer-service oriented your staff is - whether yours is a big time resto or not - the more customers will be satisfied. The more customers are satisfied, the higher the chance that they will revisit and recommend your resto. Period.

Pamana is now open to serve the City of Pines.
Pamana Restaurant in Baguio City is Now Open
Pamana Restaurant, which is a Legacy of the old Bario Fiesta, is now open to serve the City of Pines. They have officially opened their doors February 19th of this year. Currently, they have branches in Baguio, Makati, Quezon City, Tagaytay and Boracay

View outside Pamana.
The Place
Pamana here in Baguio is spacious and I like its ambiance. It's absolutely perfect for a romantic or even a friendly date. Their glass chairs looks amazingly good!

Inside Pamana Restaurant - Baguio. Looking great, isn't it?
Beautiful, isn't it? I absolutely like how Pamana was designed and conceptualized.
The Food
We've tried Pamana's Big Island Chichen Katsu, Chocolate Ah and Afternoon Tea Set  -nothing really extraordinary about the taste.

Big Island Chicken Katsu: Chicken breasts coated with Macadamia Nuts and bread crumbs deep fried to a golden finish served with Pamana's famous katsu dipping sauce and tropical marmalade.
Chocolate Ah.
Afternoon tea set: 2 tier platter with assorted pandesal sanwiches, turon, palitaw and puto bumbong served with tea of choice. Good for 2-3 persons.
The Price
Price ranges is from Php250 and up. Big Island Chicken Katsu costs Php280.00, Chocolate Ah for three costs Php210 and Afternoon Tea Set costs Php380.00.

Yours truly with Wynn and Amos.
The Disappointment
Now, you might wonder: what caused the disappointment? I have two: (1) It took them at least thirty minutes to serve our food which I find unjustifiable because I didn't see other customers order prior to us. Fact is, there were only few customers at Pamana during our visit.Waiting thirty minutes is absolutely annoying. (2) We had to call thrice before they gave us our bill. We were rushing because we will watch Run All Night starring Liam Neeson so just imagine the agony of waiting. It's very disappointing that Andy (I've checked the waiter's name tag) totally ignored our request to get the bill for us. Good thing the lady waiter (I forgot to get her name) got it nicely for us.

Message frm Happy Ilagan Ongpauco-Tan.
How to go to Pamana Restaurant Baguio
Get a cab and tell the driver to bring you to the old Bario Fiesta located beside Casa Vallejo. Pamana Restaurant is located at Igorot Stair, Upper Session Road, Baguio City (just below SM City Baguio). They are open from 10am to 9pm.

Everything Nice's courteous staff plus the mouthwatering food definitely made our cluster meeting a memorable one and, just like what I always say if my experience was a rewarding one, it's worth blogging for. I won't talk about what we've discussed in our cluster meeting here primarily because it's something that I shouldn't be sharing in public and, also, I'm currently experiencing literary power deficiency. On top of these, I've also got some articles due this week.

Cluster mates. In this photo: Coach Josie, Coach Jmay, OM Leah and Yours Truly. Missing in action: Coach Chris.

What Will I Exactly "Say" If I am Dead and It's My Burial Day

$

Let's say, I'm dead and it's my burial day, what will I exactly "tell" my loved ones? Here it is:

To Lolo and Lola: I'm your favorite apo- no doubt. Thank you for the unconditional love you’ve given me. I thank you for all the wonderful things that you did when I stayed with you for almost six years. I always remember how you carried me every time we go somewhere. I thank you for our trip to Laguna and Batangas when I was only five years old. Those were my first trips. Thanks too for the bringing me to movie houses back in the ‘90s. Maraming salamat po sa ginawa niyong “swing” sa likod ng bahay at sa pagtatangol sa akin kung pinapagalitan ako ni Papa o kaya ni Mama. Those are precious memories that I will always be thankful of. One of my greatest fears in this world is to see you dead. I know it's going to be very painful for me. I love you both.

Bicol 2014.
To Mama and Papa: Thank you sa pagpapaaral sa akin and for all the sacrifices. Mama, thank you for the love you've shown me. I will always be a "mama's boy." Haha!  Papa, I’ve hated you but I’ve learned to forgive you. Yun nga lang, hindi tayo close. Sayang. Tama si Mama nung sinabi niya sayo na lalayo loob naming magkakapatid sayo dahil super-strict ka. Anyway, I still thank you because you made me tough. I don't cry easily. I love you both!

To my two sisters: Ako ang bida! Haha! Of course, ako ang bida. Haha! Your Kuya loves you both. Pasensya na kung ako lagi ang bida. I’m wishing you all the best in your life and career!

Tatak UP forever!

To Wynn and Amos: Thank you for being with me when I badly needed someone to be with me. Maraming salamat sa lahat: sa treats (haha), sa movies and travel escapades. I won’t forget you. Andame nating tawa - more than twenty. Haha! Sino ba ang makakalimot nung nagtanong tayo ng Maroon-colored jacket dahil hindi natin afford price at wala naman talaga tayong balak bumili? Haha! Thank you Sibs for everything. I love you both. Oh by the way, I wish I told you my secret. I'm sure you'll be surprised. Or maybe not! Haha!

Batangas Port 2015.
To Theresa and Leah: I miss our travel and food escapades. I miss you both! Haha!

To Team Awesome: Thank you for everything that you do. Always remember our team motto wherever you are: Always do the right thing even if no one is watching." Always remember that discipline and character are very important. I love you guys.

To Ace: Every time you talk to me, it’s always x-rated – walang pinipiling lugar. Haha! I love you friend.

To the GDC QA Team: Thank you for the laughter and fun and for the memories. You will surely be missed. Thanks for teaching me how to be mean. Haha!

To WF team – Thank you sa pull-out and kwentuhan during break time. Haha!

To Someone Extremely Special To Me:  It's too late. I wish I  told you that I loved you more than anyone else in this world. I wish I had the courage to tell you that you are special because I love you. "I'm in love with you, and I'm not in the business of denying myself the simple pleasure of saying true things. I'm in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we're all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we'll ever have, and I am in love with you.” (Source: The Fault in Our Stars) I can't thank you enough because I met you. Thank you for the priceless memories.

Thank you to everyone who's been part of my life. I wish I can write all of your names here.

If you're looking for something affordable, yummylicious and "of considerable size"(sorry for my parallelism) fried chicken, don't go too far. Visit Raf's Fried Chicken located at Loakan Road (near Sitel and Texas Instrument) here in Baguio City. For as low as Php65.00 (with rice), you'll definitely enjoy a mouth-watering and crunchy Fried Chicken at Raf's Fried Chicken. Raf's is definitely recommended, especially for all fried chicken lovers out there!

The food questors: Jana, Coach Jmay, Jessica and Yours Truly.
Big thanks to Jana and Jessica for inviting me to check the place. I'm looking forward for our next escapades.Haha!

Raf's Fried Chicken also offers Fried Fish and Vegetables.
Raf's Fried Chicken: It's big. It's yummy. It's crunchy. It's absolutely affordable. Try it.
Reminder: Raf's Fried Chicken is always "full" at noon. If you want to visit them, make sure you go there as early as eleven or visit them past one in the afternoon. People from Texas Instrument normally drop by there during their lunch break. They also serve Fried Fish and Vegetables at a very affordable price. Raf's Fried Chicken also accepts "take-outs." The place is also a typical Philippine restaurant so do not expect a sophisticated ambiance. Go somewhere if you're looking for a luxurious place.

Chili sauce is simply irresistible at Raf's Fried Chicken.
How to go to Raf's Fried Chicken
If you're in town, ride a Kias-PMA bound jeepney at tell the driver to drop you at TI (Texas Instrument). Fare is Php11.00. You can also ride a cab. Approximate fare: Php90.00.

How To Travel Cheap To Cabongaoan Beach in Burgos, Pangasinan

If my memory serves me right, I think it was two months ago before our planned escapade when I read  about Cabongaoan beach in Burgos, Pangasinan being included in the top ten virgin beaches in the Philippines. Not knowing what to visit this summer and, due to my desire for something "adventurous," I invited Wynn and Amos to join me. Fortunately, they agreed. Then, we've got Theresa and Janelle. Unfortunately, Wynn and Janelle weren't able to join us.
It's a beach! It's a virgin! Ir's Cabongaoan Beach!
I'll have a separate blog about our beach escapade from Cabongaoan to Tambobong Beach. For now, I'll write some tips on how to travel cheap to Cabongaoan Beach. Here they are:

1. Bring your own tent or car. From Baguio City, we reached Cabongaoan Beach past nine in the evening. We were first timers in that place and it was totally dark when we arrived. We didn't have any reservation so left with no option but to stay in a tent. Good thing I brought mine so we didn't spend anything for accommodation. We only spent less than Php200 at Cabongaoan Beach. Bringing a car also means: you've got something to sleep the entire night and you have "something" with you to take you anywhere you want to go. Getting a ride in Cabongaoan in very difficult so bringing a private vehicle will be a big advantage. In our case, we spent Php300 for the tryke fare from Burgos Plaza to Cabongaoan Beach.
Behind our tent plus breakfast at the sea. In this photo: Yours Truly and Amos.
2. Contact Sir Ariel at 0916-496-5105. Sir Ariel lives at Cabongaon and he is very hospitable. Currently, he is making some renovations in the area where campers and travelers can stay. He can also help you get a ride. Contact him if you want to go to Cabongaoan. If he inquires where you got his number, tell him that you got it from me. Tell him that he brought us to Tambobong Beach from Cabongaoan.

Yours Truly with Sir Ariel and his son. Please contact him should you have inquries about accommodation and transporation
The crystal-like water at Cabongaoan Beach is totally irresistible. In this photo: Theresa, Amos and Yours Truly.
3. Bring your food. Although the commodities sold in Cabongaoan is cheaper that those in Puerto Galera or Boracay, I would still recommend that you bring your own food. You can also cook there. Please contact Sir Ariel for assistance.

Here's an overview of our expenses for the two nights and three days beach escapade:

Cabongaoan Beach is a pristine beach located in the town of Burgos, Pangasinan. It lies in the coastal barrio of Cabongaoan.

Top 14 Things To Do at Cabongaoan Beach in Burgos, Pangasinan

Cabongaoan Beach in Burgos, Pangasinan is considered as one of the top ten virgin beaches in the Philippines primarily because of its isolation and natural and unadulterated scenery. Compared to known beach destinations in the Philippines like Boracay or White Beach in Puerto Galera, Cabongaoan Beach Resort is a bit "far" from what I call "beachalization" or the process of transforming a virgin beach into something highly commercialized. Unlike Boracay or Puerto Galera, there's no banana boating, paragliding, jetskiing and the like in Cabongaoan. So what will you do then? Don't worry I've come up with some highly considerable things that you might also do in Cabongaoan Beach. Here they are:

1. Sleep in a tent. Oh come on! Get out of your comfort zone and sleep outside. You get wet because of the rain? Hmm...it's an experience that you will remember forever. Don't forget the date the first time you slept in a tent.

2. Bury yourself in sand.  The last thing you know is someone places an artificial heart on your "sand chest" and you weren't aware that it's there when the photo was taken. Haha! It's cool! Thanks Theresa!

3. Jump Shot. Make sure that one directs how you will jump, what position, etc. Haha! Don't forget to count and jump at the same time. If you don't, you need to do it several times until all of you are exhausted. Haha!

4. Play dead. Just play dead and pretend you are all alone.Think about happiness. Think about the most precious people in your life. Think about the person that you love more than anyone else in this world and be happy.

5. Groupie in the sand. Well, who cannot resist and powdery yellowish sand? Don't forget to bring your monopod.

6. Swim and beat the waves. It doesn't matter if you get sunburn. Afterall, you went to the beach to get tanned.

7. Drink coffee. Who says "coffeeing" is not allowed at the beach? No one, I guess.

8. Meditate. Just stare at the sea. That's it! On a physical level, meditation, lowers high blood pressure, lowers the levels of blood lactate, reducing anxiety attacks, decreases any tension-related pain, such as, tension headaches, ulcers, insomnia, muscle and joint problems

9. Take a photo of your shoes and bag. I swear. It looks cool.

10. Show your abs! Like what Amos did! Look! I wish I have abs too. Haha!

11. Pray. Pray as early as five in the morning and thank God for his creation. Pray because you are happy and you've been given another day to live.Thank him for everything!

12. Be happy! Ryza Mae Dizon always say "Bawal ang sad. Dapat happy." Cherish every moment with the people you are with. Every moment is precious. Be happy.

13. Cover your face while someone is taking a photo of you. Not a bad idea, right?

14. Befriend someone and ask him/her to take a photo of you. Because you want a photo of you and your companion to not look like everything was taken with your stretched arms, ask someone to take a photo of you instead. Be nice though.

You, too, can come up with your top things to do in Cabongaoan. I'll leave it up to you. I don't want to overthink. Haha! Good luck!

We were looking for a new place where we can eat when Coach Josie told us that we can drop by Porch at Camp 7 here in Baguio City. I haven't visited this place yet so I felt good when everyone agreed to check it. From our work place, it took us approximately ten minutes to reach Emithia's Porch by Chef Joao. Located before the Camp 7 Satelite Market, Emithia's Porch by Chef Joao opened February of this year.

The Place
The place is colorful and, although it's small compared to other food establishments, Emithia's Porch by Chef Joao offers a very comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. The place is also very accessible to travelers because it's located along Kennon Road. Emithia's Porch by Chef Joao  is also a wifi-zone area.

Inside Porch.
The Food and The Price
Emithia's Porch by Chef Joao has definitely a lot to offer plus they've got reasonable prices. Check what we've got:

My pick during our first visit: Fried Chicken Sampler  (Php230.00)- three flavors in one plate served with chips or rice and mixed veggies. I've tired Piri-piri (spicy chicken), Barbecue and Original flavors. Fried Chicken Sample is highly recommended. Fact is, I recommended this to Jessica during our second visit.
My pick during our second visit: Prime Beef T-bone (I prefer well-done) - grilled to perfection served with rice or freshly cut fries and mixed vegetables. Costs Php230.00. I highly recommend that you try this.
Pork Belly BBQ: melts-in-the- mouth pork belly coated in a moderately sweet but extremely tangy, Chef Joao's BBQ sauce, served with rice and mixed veggies. I'd love to try this but, unfortunately, I stopped eating Pork. Costs Php190.00.
Beef Emerenciana - tender beef stewed in flavorful creamy sauce served with rice and mixed veggies. Costs Php190.00.
Porch Strawberry Iced Tea. CostsPhp60.00.
Imported Sodas at Php60.00 each.
For dessert. Costs Php120.00.
The Customer Service
Emithia's Porch by Chef Joao staff is very accommodating and nice. During our first visit, we were definitely entertained well and our food were served just on time. In our second visit, they were also nice, even the sister of the owner was also very hospitable. They were always smiling and they've even very much willing to take photo. They were polite and courteous.

During my second visit with Jessica and Jana from our WorkforceTeam.
With my clustermates: Japheth, Tope, Josie, Janice, Brenda, OM Rowell and Yours Truly.

Casa de Viajeros in Baler is Your Home Away From Home

There are three things that I highly consider when "travelling on a budget" and the most important is staying in a comfortable yet affordable hotel or inn. As a budget traveler, it is extremely important for me to take into consideration the "pricing" of a hotel or inn. Staying in a pricey room accommodation would definitely "eat"much of my budget and this is something that I don't want to happen. Good thing we found Casa de Viajeros in our recent three-day Baler, Aurora escapade! They've definitely made our stay in Baler memorable and affordable!

I "heart" Casa de Viajeros!  After our early morning combat with the waves, I asked Amos to take this photo for me.
Casa de Viajeros (if the Spanish I've learned back in my old UP days serves me correct) directly translates to "House of Travelers," and I'm pretty glad we've decided to stay here. It's absolutely perfect for "travelers on a budget" like us. Situated at the heart of Baler, Casa de Viajeros is accessible to the public. They offer air-conditioned rooms at reasonable prices.

The Customer Service
Customer service is another thing that I highly consider when staying in a hotel or inn. An excellent customer service would definitely make one's stay memorable and extraordinary. Big thanks to Casa de Viajeros for the warm welcome and for their hospitality! Tita Virgie was absolutely nice and she was very accommodating. We arrived in Baler around eight in the evening and we were gladly welcomed. Tita Virgie also invited us to watch the live acoustics performance of some local bands (I learned from Tita Virgie that they have acoustics performances on Saturday nights). We were exhausted when we arrived due to the eight-hour bus ride so we were not able to watch the performance.

Thumbs up for Casa de Viajeros. In this photo: Yours Truly, the ever-nice-and-accommodating Tita Virgie of Casa de Viajero, Wynn, Ceska and Amos.
Our Rooms
Yes, it's "rooms"because we transferred to another room on our second nightWe love the first room because it's spacious but we're pretty much happy because we've got to try other rooms offered by Casa de Viajeros. It has aircon, two beds, private C.R. and a cable-tv. Big thanks to Tita Virgie for offering us the other room.

We stayed here Day 1. Our room was spacious. There's a parking area here as well.
Our Day 2 room accommodation.
Bed 1.
Bed 2.
How to go to Casa de Viajeros
Look for this spot (see image below) in Baler, turn right and walk for at least five to ten minutes (depending on how fast you walk) and you'll definitely find Casa de Viajeros. (If you plan to ride a tryke, as of this writing, it will cost you Php12.00/head). If you have a private vehicle and in case you don't know where the place is, I recommend that you look for the spot below.

Check "Casa de Viajeros This Way" sign. (In this photo: My travel buddy Amos and my backpack lying on the ground).
From the "Casa de Viajeros This Way" signage, it will take you at least five minutes to reach the Casa. The place is also known to drivers as "Viyosh."

For inquiries on latest room pricing and further questions, please contact Casa de Viajeros at +63918-256-9111. Please mention you were referred by WanderingPinoy/Aris. You may also send inquiries on their Facebook Fanpage. Casa de Viajeros is a place where you, your family and/or friends can stay near Sabang Beach at affordable rates! I highly recommend that you check them out in one of your Baler escapades.

Top 10 Things To Do In Baler, Aurora

Sagada is the only place here in the Philippines that I want to visit over and over again (I've been there four times and will be there anytime soon) but not until we've conquered Baler in Aurora province a few days back. Our 3-day visit there changed everything and Baler is now part of my "places to revisit" list. Undeniably, Baler is gifted with numerous natural wonders which is why I'd definitely love to go back there - alone or, perhaps, with some of my friends and travel buddies. Just perhaps. Haha!

I'll write a more detailed blog entry about our recent 3-day Baler escapade in my next article (I'll primarily focus on how to travel cheap to Baler from Baguio City) so, for now, I'd love to share some things that you can do in Baler, Aurora. Here's what I've got on my list:

1. Climb at Aniao Islets. A visit in Baler without climbing Aniao Islets would definitely be incomplete. Unless you're not into climbing, Aniao Islets is perfect for rock climbers! Amos and I tried climbing and it's definitely awesome!

Who says climbing is bad?
 2. Ask your tour guide to take a photo of you on the edge of one of the big rocks. I tried and it's cool. At first, I was afraid but I overcame my fear. Make sure to balance yourself, otherwise, you'll fall.

Fearless! One wrong move and I'll fall.
3. Take a selfie. Well, selfies aren't bad after all. Haha!

Amos: The selfie king. Haha!
 4. Watch sunrise at Sabang Beach and jump! You shouldn't miss this! Make sure you wake up as early as five in the morning and rush yourself to the beach.

That's yours truly at Sabang beach.
5. Beat the waves! And pretend you are the surf board. It's cool but it's painful. Haha!

That's me after a few hours of swimming and playing with the great Sabang waves.
6. Visit Daguisit Falls. Be careful. I almost fell here. Don't forget to visit Mother Falls too.

At Daguisit Falls. In this photo: Wynn, Ceska, Yours Truly and Amos.
7. Eat "ice cream sticks" at Ermita Hill view deck. I'm pretty sure kids will love it...and adults too

Ceska enjoying her ice cream.
8. Look for this spot at Ermita Hill, climb and pretend you are Oble. Make sure you don't undress yourself. The public will be mad at you. Or I might be wrong. Haha!

Amos imitating Oble.
9. Climb the Balete Tree and make sure you climb as if you're a kid. You can only climb 3 meters from the ground. Make sure you follow instructions.

Amos and I at the Balete.
10. Ask your tour guide to take your family picture. Wynn and I did it and it's cool.

My "family" thousands miles away from home: Wynn and Ceska.
11. Don't forget to smile. Because the world is beautiful.

Amos: The Sabang Beach model. Haha! Peace dude!
I can actually come up with an endless list but i'm a bit busy right now. Watch out for my blog entry about our recent Baler escapade anytime soon.

Yup, you read it right, your Wandering Pinoy "was Nicki Minaj" earlier today in my current workplace's fun activity! We imitated foreign celebrity singers. Lol! I aimed for the top spot but, unfortunately, I didn't make it. Well, my objective supposedly is "to make it" before I leave the company. Haha! Anyway, it's good that everyone had fun! Lol!

One thing I've learned today: you gotta be patient during the "make-up"session. #FirstTime
Here are the other participants:

Lol! Big thanks to all the ladies who helped me with my "stuff." Haha!

The Great Escapade to Pugo Adventure on the Day I Resigned

July 1, 2015 is definitely memorable for me not only because I resigned from my work (after more than 5 years of service) but also because of our great escapade to Pugo Adventure right after our last shift. I was with Amos and Brenda. Wynn, my good friend, was not able to join us because she's afraid of heights and she needs to take care of Cezka. Brenda, on the other hand, was my colleague in the Quality Department, and it's just lately that she's joining us.
Yours Truly with my good friend Amos.
From Baguio City, we took an ordinary Victory Liner bus, left past 12 noon and we arrived in Pugo before one. Fare, as of this writing, is Php42.00. Anyway, I'm extremely busy right now preparing my stuff before I go to Taguig for a new career, so I'll post here some of the photos taken during our PUGAD escapade. Big thanks to Amos for some of the photos.

In this photo: Yours Truly, Brenda and Amos. So far, this is one of my favorite photos taken at PUGAD. The view is grand. I feel like I'm in a foreign land. Lol! Photo courtesy of my good friend Amos.
Amazing isn't it? We spent most of our time swimming at the pool. It was fun. Photo courtesy of my good friend Amos.
At the kiddie pool during our ocular inspection.
It's Kayaking time! Look who's standing!
At the hanging bridge.
The Pugad Adventure endorsers! Lol! Anyway, a little display of skin won't hurt anyone. In this photo: Yours Truly and my good friend Amos. Photo taken before we hit the pool.
As a budget travelers, we made sure that we didn't spend a lot. Here's an overview of our expenses:
  • Lunch - Php150.00/head (We didn't have choice but to eat at the resto in Pugad. If you're planning to go to Pugad, make sure you eat first. Food is pricey.)
  • Entrance fee (includes unlimited pool usage)
  • Kayaking - Php50.00
  • Fare - Php42.00 one- way fare via Victory Liner
  • Tryke Fare to and from Pugad - Php10.00/head
Pugo Adventure also known as PUGAD is located in Pugo, La Union. For inquiries and details, please call 0917 506 6931 or like Pugad's Facebook Fanpage.
